range hood outside vent problem!

The other day when I was running an inspection on our almost new minilite 2011, I noticed that the screws on the outside range hood vent were rusting . The colour white was not white anymore but a rusty colour. I took the screws out and most of the whole screws were rusted even inside the treaded section. And I found why. On the top of the vent there are 3 holes that lets the water in between these 2 plastic parts that form the outside section. Water get trapped between the pieces and rust the screws at the lower section of the vent. I put a bit of silicone over these 3 holes and replaced the screws with new one. I noticed also that the latest production of the new minilite uses a different model of outside vent. I have included 3 pictures to show the proble. On a long run the water ca penetrate inside the screws and cause damages to the sandwitch wall

I checked mine out today and looks like mine has a cover over it so you can't see the hinges like your picture shows.

sherdep: you have probably the newest version of the vent. Mine was built in august 2010.

thanks - I still had to check cause I do not want any issues later down the road.

I probably do considering mine was built in February 2011 but still a 2011 model though so wasnt sure if I had the change or not

Here is the fact about this range hood. I did some investigations about it. The vent is made by HENG"S. The 3 holes that you see are there for a purpose. They are actually hinges that move the outside cover up after you remove the 2 screws. But keep reading: all around this cover as you can see on my pictures it has been sealed at the factory with silicone. The silicone prevent the outer cover to open if you want to clean the vent inside and the water from the rain has no place to drain except between the two piece of plastic and rusting the 2 screws and eventually find its way inside the sandwitch wall. The idea to seal these 3 holes is the only way to go if you dont want problems. And between me and you the possibility to open this outside cover is next to never unless you cook greasy meals over your cooktop. I am sure that not only my unit is like that but all yours also (sealed with silicone)

As I can see many versions of this outside vent are on the markets and installed at the factory depending of the avaliability they have on hands.
