Rockwood 2109S Towing

This type of question has probably been beat to death on this forum, but here it goes again. I anticipate buying A Rockwood mini lite 2109s with a GVWR of 5700 or a comparably weighted trailer. I want to tow it with an F150 2.7 liter eco boost 4x2, a 3.55 axle ratio, and regular tow package. According to the ford Ford website, if I read it correctly, the max towing capacity of this vehicle is 7700 lbs. There will be a total of 2 persons in the vehicle and I will mainly be towing on flat surfaces with a yearly trip to the mountains of North Carolina. I want the 2.7 liter engine for it’s fuel efficiency, cost and because most of the miles I put on the vehicle I will not be towing the trailer. I am aware that fuel economy goes out the window when towing. The whole subject of towing capacity is a bit confusing to me. Simply put is this vehicle sufficient to tow this travel trailer. I welcome all comments and opinions. I would especially like to hear for 2109s owners

you don't mention the payload of the truck. open the door and read the tag. two numbers to consider. payload of truck usually runs out long before the max tow rating.

Post what the truck's payload is. The yellow Tires and Loading sticker will say "Occupants and cargo should not exceed xxxxlbs".
Figuring 13% for loaded tongue weight, comes to 741lbs.

Minimum std payload for a 4x2 with the 2.7 is 1,710 lbs. I wouldn't think payload would be an issue.

Where did you get that number? Payload capacity is specific to how each vehicle is spec'd and equipped. There is no standard payload capacity number.

Page 21 of the Ford 2019 F150 Specs, this is standard payload before any options added. 1,710 lbs is the lowest payload available (before options) for a 4x2 with the 2.7.

Umm, 1710 is the max. Look at the chart.

My point was the lowest maximum stock payload for a 4x2 with the 2.7 EB is 1,710.

Take away 700 lbs for tongue weight and 400 for passengers, that still gives 600 pounds for cargo and options. If he bought the lowest max payload truck

Maybe I initially posted the wrong question. After reading the above discussion I realize I understand very little about towing payloads, capacity etc. Maybe I should have requested a reference for a towing for dummies manual!

A lot of times, you will run out of payload capacity long before towing capacity. It's all part of the formula for safe towing. Read for Ford Towing Guide for some useful information.

Don't feel alone, I wish I did more research before I got my TV/trailer combination. You did come to the right place.

Your primary focus should be on your truck's payload capacity. Towing capacity is secondary to payload capacity because nearly all tow vehicles will run out of payload capacity WAY before reaching the max towing capacity.
Whatever is in your truck(driver, passengers, cargo, aftermarket add-ons and the WDH) all reduce that payload number by their weights. What ever is left over, will be towards the trailer's loaded tongue weight.

I'm not sure if it is still the case but make sure to get the trailer brake controller installed. You used to have to order the Max Tow Package to the the brake controller. It didn't come with the basic Tow Package.

When you are looking at trucks, pay attention to the payload sticker in the drivers side door. It will tell you the max payload of that specific truck. It is different for every truck based on equipment and options.

Payload is equal to the occupants of the vehicle + tongue weight of the trailer + any other cargo you will load in the truck. (I would leave some extra just in case.)

You have the 3.5 EcoBoost, not the 2.7. And the OP has the standard tow package while you may have the Max Tow package.

I tow a 2109S with a '16 F150 2wd 2.7 and a 3.31 axle.

Pulls that trailer, with the bed full of camping stuff and a full size cap on the 6.5' bed, like it wasn't there.

Excellent power, plenty to spare... and gets decent mpg's as long as speed is kept at 65 or 63 mph use tow/haul mode and lock out overdrive in the hills.

10+ where it is flat, and 8.5 to 9mpg's in the hills or mountains.

Power passing and pulling will not be an issue with that little monster under the hood.

You'll be fine. Yes your mpg is going to stink...they all do while towing, but hookup and go have fun.

Crazy, but on our F150. I ordered ours back in 2016, before we had the camper...

I ordered with factory tow pkg, but at the time we had utility trailers without brakes so I did not get the brake controller, or tow mirrors.

I wanted the tow mirrors but the salesman talked me out of them, ... on a custom order, I know, my bad...

I would get the OEM brake controller and tow mirrors if you don't have them.

I Amazoned those, had to have Ford dlr zap the trucks computer for the brk cntrl.

The mirrors I went with Trail Ridge brand power tow mirrors.

Very good quality and easy to install yourself... should be automatic with tow pkg..

Excellent extra mirror view even when not towing.
