RV parts help.

I discovered 2 weeks ago during a trip, that the Windjammer toilet would not hold water, it leaks out slowly. I think I asked for some ideas on this forum, and was told that the gasket for the slide was probably dry and there is a product that you poor in the toilet, let it sit and it kinda lubricates the gasket. Well, I went to my local RV store today and the salesman said it was a waste of money. It either needs a good cleaning or replacement. Sounds reasonable. I told him the toilet held the rv antifreeze all winter with no problems. He asked why did I put antifreeze in a toilet that did not have water, that was a waste. I thought you put the antifreeze in the toilet to keep the gasket moist..I walked out of the store did not buy anything. I will clean the gasket and lubricate it with some petroleum jelly and see if that works. Kinda felt stupid when I left, I thought I had been doing things right.Any thoughts ???

Dealer wants to sell you a new toilet.
It is the seal and if you have gloves reach down there and pull it back up in place and see what happens.

You can also buy a new seal and it can be installed from above without removing the toilet. Gloves needed for sure.
Good luck

Do not use petroleum jelly as the name says it is a petroleum product and can damage the seal. Pick up a small tube of silicon pool lube at any pool store. You only need a very thin film. If that doesn't work, you may need to replace it.

I leave antifreeze in the toilet all the time in the winter, we store ours in a mine but i still blow out the lines and pour antifreeze in the traps and the toilet so there is no evaporation of water and odor. Use some plumbers silicon which you can pick up at HD or Lowes.

I worked on the toilet today ( sounds like fun ) cleaned it real good and lubricated the seal with some silicone spray. I discovered that the ball was not completely closing after a flush, thus was allowing water to escape slowly out the trap. Don't know for sure but after lubrication and cleaning it was holding water. I will check it in a few days to see if the water is still holding. One thing I discovered, just like someone stated after use you need to release the foot lever and let the value "slam " then it seats correctly and holds water. Thanks for the help, I am sure I will be asking for more later.

Recently was holding a small tactical flashlight above ours shining the light down through the toilet. (My reason is too long to go into) so, anyone guess what happened? I saved it before it disappeared but it did scare the crap out of me (pun intended). Scrapped the back of my hand getting the light out and was just thankful my hands are not bigger. Kind of like hand in the cookie jar, hand fits fine until you grip something then fit is a bit tighter.

Tired of talking about this crappy subject now.

Checked the toilet after 3 days still holding water. The silicone and a good cleaning worked. Thanks again for the info.

I would still use antifreeze to cover the seal in the winter months. Keeps gasket lubed and prevents odors from escaping from the black tank.

Just my humble opinion.

Would just wipe some Danco Silicone paste on it about 2x a year and especially when you winterize. You can get it at Lowes or HD.

X2...

Ours was leaking last summer slowly, just like yours. Took OC's suggestion and put on the rubber gloves, spread a little Danco on the top and bottom of the seal and not a drop has leaked since.

Just my $0.02

Thanks, I will have to find that silicone paste. I think it would last longer than the spray. Couldn't find it at Lowe's, gonna check Home depot Shouldn't it be in with the plumbing.?

Here's a link at Home Depot with the item number. This is in a tube, but I purchased it in a container like the picture in OC's reply.

DANCO 0.5 oz. Silicone Faucet Grease-88693 - The Home Depot

Happy travels...

FWIW, there are two main versions of RV antifreeze: Ethanol based antifreeze and Propylene based antifreeze. The cheapest by far is the Ethanol version and is probably the one most people buy because of its low cost since they are both sold as "RV Antifreeze." Being alcohol based it has two main drawbacks - it is very flammable (you'll see the little fire warning pictogram on the container) and it also tends to dry out rubber seals in faucets and toilets. The Propylene version on the other hand acts as a lubricant and will keep rubber seals in great condition. Where I live, the Propylene antifreeze is roughly twice the price of the Ethanol so you can guess what is mostly sold around here.

Actually, if the black tank is drained properly when needed (winterization is one of those needed times) there never would be any odor to mask in the toilet with an empty black tank. A spray of silicone on the seal can't hurt when storing. Antifreeze in an empty toilet does nothing.

I put antifreeze in my toilet when I winterize the supply line going to the toilet. I will also add to the bowel to keep the seals wet. You could have asked how he winterizes his RV toilet supply line?
