RW 8311ss: picking up Friday!!

Upgraded from our 1996 RW signature pop up to the new tt. Platinum pkg., loaded. Can't be happier. Thinking about upgrading tt wheels to D. Upgrading TV wheels before pick up. Pulling with a 2008 sierra vortec max. Prob going to upgrade to a 3/4 ton soon. I've downloaded a few pdi checklists. Any recommendations or anything I need to have before first trip in a few weeks. Definitely getting a surge protector off the bat. Thanks in advance.

Congrats! Thats a heck of a upgrade!

We just picked our new one up last thursday. I already ordered new Maxxiss tires to upgrade the ones that come on it too.

I've been researching and reading all the threads on the wheels, great info. There's so much we need to buy and so much more that we want. Thank you.

Mrs Jennifer w one big suggestion would be make sure u get a good weight distribution hitch. I went cheap and now I'm looking to invest in a quality hitch setup due to white knuckle driving

Thanks. The dealer is giving is an EZ lift hitch and we are getting a sway control as well. Not sure of this is a good one. Will be looking more into it in case we need to get a different one.

If it's a eaz round bar I would suggest you ask if they carry equalizer or blue ox. I'm in a situation where I took a cheap hitch and now I'm looking to upgrading due to the performance.

Our next WDH will definitely be the Blue Ox Sway-Pro.

Watch their video here: SwayPro By Blue Ox

BTW, looks like we'll be buying as new 8310SS Trailer very soon.
Happy trails,

You are wise to upgrade to D tires. The ones that come on these rigs aren't too swift.

You will need double sway bars if you go with friction type.
It will work...I have a 1200/12000 WDH made by Husky with double sway bars.
Works just fine with my unit...wich is same length as yours, and cost effective.

=====================

Just received a reply from Brett Doberenz at Forest River in regard to my question about "C" rated tires on the Rockwood Signature Series:

Q.-
1- Can this unit be ordered with “D” rated tires instead of “C” rated? Literature indicates it comes with ST225/75R/C tires as standard.

ANS:We do not have tire options. We cannot install tires that would overstate the cargo carrying limit of our trailers as defined by the GVWR, axle, frame and wheels used. You can upgrade to aftermarket tires if you desire, but realize the GVWR and cargo carrying capacity doesn’t change with higher rate tires.

That's also what he told me in a phone call prior to our 8329SS purchase. Yes, the cheap tires they put on on their trailers are rated for the RV's maximum weight, but the tires lose capacity as they age. Better to have excess capacity to account for that fact.

ST225/75R15 LR-C tires have 2150lbs of capacity each for a total of 8600lbs.
The Rockwood website says my 8329 has a GVWR of 8850lbs, minus 883lbs of hitch weight means those tires will have 7967lbs riding on them if you load to the max GVWR.

That gives each tire 158lbs of excess capacity or 316lbs per axle, and that's if you manage to load your gear so that each axle has equal weight. Keep in mind that this is when those tires are new.

Upgrade to LR-D and each tire has 2540lbs of capacity, excess capacity jumps to 548lbs per tire and 1096lbs per axle which is almost 2200lbs of total excess capacity. Also if you buy a name brand, you'll likely have a better tire.

Rockwood is correct that upgrading to LR-D tires won't increase the capacity of the trailer or the axles. It will decrease the odds of a blowout as your tires age though, and perhaps even before.

Yes, double sway bars will be put on immediately also. That's interesting FR doesn't have the option to upgrade. I just want to avoid blowouts and just have a sturdier tire. Thanks for the info.

Congrats on the upgrade, be sure to check both ir33 radios on the unit. The problem that most have is the volume going up and down by itself. My unit is at dealer waiting them to be replaced. Other than that small problem we love our unit. Plenty of room for a family of five.

On my radio IRV. 66 with the volume set less than. 6 it would cut in and out. We like streaming audio in the background I could turn mine up loud and did ok. Just something to check.
