Tettegouche State Park / Silver Bay, MN

The DW and I booked several nights at Tettegouche State Park near Silver Bay, MN for the week of July 4th. Us flat landers know nothing about bears, and game larger than mule deer. What can we expect and what should we prepare for?

She has never been to Canada so we plan on a day trip up Highway 61 to Thunder Bay. I've read enough information about personal protection devices and trying to cross the border so that won't be an issue.

Appreciate any feedback.

We've camped on the North Shore for several years now,(with a popup and now TT) and live in northern MN. Big animal sightings in campgrounds aren't too common, now skunks and racoons are another story. Just use common sense, put away food, garbage, anything that attracts them. We usually leave our grill on the picnic table, but it's locked to the table with a bike lock so they can't knock it down or try to drag it away. Last summer we also spent a couple nights at Kackabecka Provincial Park, it has a beautiful waterfall and is just a short drive from Thunder Bay. Also drove to Sleeping Giant Provincial Park for the day, about an hour or hour and a half from Thunder Bay. Very nice. Highly recommend Fort William Historical Site in Thunder Bay, and Grand Portage National Monument on the states side. Would definitely make the trip again. MN welcomes you, enjoy your visit!

I agree with "keep camping". We have stayed at Tettegouch, Splitrock, and also Temperance River which is our favorite.
Also, Grand Marais is a nice city to walk around in.
If you have time, take hwy 1 to Ely, you will be glad you did, trust me! It is a nice drive, and you can spend a day at Ely ne problem; the Wolf Exhibit and the Bear Exhibit are nice.
Finally, if you are traveling with pets, you will need health papers, etc to go into Canada. Also, don't forget your passports!!
