Tire blowout

I just returned from a 3 week cross country motorcycle trip and had a near miss of someone else's doing. A guy pulling a long bumper pull trailer with a Dooley diesel was pulling the trailer in the neighborhood of 80mph. I figure that he was probably just a transport guy delivering the trailer someplace so he did not really care about the long term result on the tires. The thought crossed my mind as he passed me that he should not be pulling the trailer that fast. Right after he passed me and was maybe 25 feet in front of me one of the tires literally exploded. I am not talking about a sudden flat. I am talking about a violent explosion. The entire sidewall blew out all in one piece and went far enough across my lane that I did not even have to swerve to miss it. All I could think about is that if I had been beside that tire it would have taken me out.

SLOW DOWN PEOPLE.

Trailer tires are not designed to go that fast.

You are 100 percent correct. Most are only designed for 65 at the max.
I tow my 35 ft no more than 58 mph.
I have seen people pulling RV's fly by me. They are waiting for a tire blowout or accident waiting to happen.
Thank God you are safe!!!👍

I just got load Range E light truck tires for my fiver. They are rated for 117mph but my speedo only goes up to 100mph so I think I'll be ok.

Newer ones are rated higher, example "L" 75mph/120km/hr. Something to do with a govt rule change.

To all that think it is OK to run at or occasionally above the max tire speed rating.
1. In testing the only requirement is 30 min at the speed with no failure. At that point the tire is considered scrap.
2. Do you feel running at or above your engine redline speed is OK and nothing bad will come of it for the remainder of the engine life?

Tireman9, those folks so interested in pulling in excess of 65 mph are just kidding themselves and will be the first ones b*tching about a tread separation or blowout after hitting a pothole, etc.

Not much bad being said about the new Carlisle tires. I've had a set for 3 years now and they are working out just fine at speeds way over 65. The OEM set didn't even make 2 years without a blow out and I kept them under 65.
