I stand corrected. Been driving 47 years and never seen or heard of a rusted thru wheel. Driven one vehicle for up to 14 years, no leaks. Bought a 67 Chevy belaire in 1997 with original wheels. Drove it 4 years, no rust thru. Guess some issues can arise tho.
Seems I remember as a kid, my dad putting water in his back hoe tires, for weight I think. 😨 Must not have known about the moisture problem.

Yup...my dad and all his farming buds did the same with tractors and swamp buggies to help with traction!

I "think" the tractor tires were normally tube type tires. The water is in the tube. FWIW I have an old ??'66 2424 tractor that has a rusted rim around the stem and a 50 john Deere that has 2 bad front rims. Both have set for many years. I think that's what causes it mostly.

Is there a good chance of a problem in real world driving? busted

Look at it this way.
# of vehicles that used nitrogen for the last 100 years?
# of miles driven by those vehicles using nitrogen?
vs
# of vehicles that used compressed air for the last 100 years?
# of miles driven by those vehicles using compressed air?

I'll stick with the real world results over time.

Most people only own a vehicle for 10 years or less anyway.

There's actually a real chance of an issue. Is it every vehicle or will happen every time, no.

In my career there were probably five wheels that had significant corrosion and two steel wheels that actually rusted through. One rusted around the valve stem and it failed suddenly while going down the road. The other rusted around the welds where the center was welded to the outer rim and fortunately started leaking before it failed. Both had roughly a cup or so of water in the tire, the majority of the rust was internal, one that came from the same stand alone air pump at a local station. I went and checked it myself and it looked like a spray gun.

The majority of this can be prevented with air from a good source. I said N2, being dry, is nearly a must for those running balancing beads and will help with corrosion problems. Not that it's an immanent threat.

It's not kool aide guys. The benefits are well apparent in the primary industries where it's used, aerospace and racing. At our level the benefits are still there, it's up the individual to choose if it's good for them.

But some people just have to kick what they don't understand. The same was said about disc brakes too. Now, would you have a vehicle without disc brakes?

It's funny, I say that yes, it can cause an issue and you guys dogpile me.

Actually sknight. I was being serious when I said " I stand corrected." Then I gave a few examples of why i thought as I did about it prior to being enlihtened by your information. I believe the intent of my sincerity was lost in the written word.
I'll never hunt down a nitrogen pump to add air to my tires but i do accept there may be benefits. Thanks for your input.

Keep a bottle of Nitrogen in race trailer...used for tires and flow checking poppet valves for pressure settings.....under stand the benefits, but we use it in more of a controlled environment, no road hazards.
