IMO after all the posts on this subject (and there have been many including mine) this one is most complete and common sense one regarding using nitrogen or air in your RV tires. It's not complicated and gives you the facts you need to make your own decision regarding this issue.

The only thing left out was the outrageous cost of nitrogen servicing and the scarcity of finding places to take your money if you decide to use nitrogen.

Heat is what causes the rise in pressure. I work in the NASCAR ranks. We use nitrogen. We still have pressure build up. However it is not near as much as compressed air due to the moisture content. I run air in my TT tires and check them frequently.

Based on my research into tire bursts on Boeing airplanes, you don't NEED nitrogen unless your rig can accelerate to 150 mph in a mile and a half and then fold its wheels up into a metal box.

I did find one incident where a main gear tire on a 727 blew out and ripped an 18" hole in the wheel-well bulkhead. It it hadn't been for a couple of USPS mail bags jamming in the hole, we might have lost the airplane.

The beads of the tire had failed in tension. One of our structures gurus calculated that the instantaneous pressure in the tire was about 12,000 psi and that it resulted from an explosive spontaneous combustion of gases that came out of the tire material.

It turned out that the airplane had taxied about 3 miles to the end of the runway and then taken off, all the time with a dragging brake. That particular airline hadn't bought the optional brake temperature monitor system, which I think became a standard feature on later airplanes.

Nitrogen atoms are larger than Oxygen so they're less likely to leak. I don't think I've had to add "air" but maybe three times in the three seasons I've had nitrogen filled tires and only a couple of pounds. Big difference from air filled tires.

Now if I could only get past the inconvenience and cost to fill them with nitrogen. It's the K-cup syndrome. I love Kurig coffeeys but not worth the 60 to 75 cents per cup plus the expensive coffee maker.

I'll continue to use my own compressor and re-fill the tires with air and buy Chock Full O' Nuts coffee.

No special gauge for checking.

But, you should think about this,
The air we breathe is 78-79% nitrogen now, if you fill a tire with air the "smaller" air molecules will leak out, eventually even after topping off only the "air" will leak out and you should only have "free" nitrogen left inside the tire.

Go to your local welding shop and rent a tank of nitrogen.
Don't forget to buy a regulator tho.

I think the one time deal for our tank was $200.00 for the tank filled.

There's hundreds of fill ups per tank!

Nitrogen works, there's no denying that. Aerospace, racing, general aviation all have proven it's benefits.

The question is, how necessary is it at the grassroots level? Rule of thumb is that regular air increases in pressure 1PSI for every 10* increase in temperature. A tire typically heats up about 50* over ambient, so we're looking at a 5PSI increase in pressure. I guarantee that you line up 10 gauges you'll see a 5PSI variation between them, and in reality 5PSI is negligible. Nitrogen does change, physics still applies, but it's on the order of .1PSI for every 10* increase.

Nitrogen doesn't leak like regular air does. I've proven it myself. My motorcycle still has 41PSI in the tires two years later, my truck was a rock solid 65-80 for two years before I replaced the tires. So there is that.

Some say it rides better. Personally, I think it does.

Lastly, it's bone dry. For those running balancing beads it's almost necessary. I like that the wheel isn't exposed to moisture. Moisture reportedly can harm the inner lining of the tire though I can't say I've ever seen that one.

The benefits are provable. The question is, do we need it in our everyday cars, trucks and trailers. Do we need aviation technology in our personal lives?

Many asked the same question about disc brakes. Sunday I tested my disc brakes very hard towing my camper on the way from Bristol, I promise, disc brakes and ABS helped keep me out of the ditch.

It's up to the individual. Personally, I have no problem with pure nitrogen. I don't mind paying the first time as I know the process to purge out air and get to a 95% N2 state is time consuming. I'm looking for a small tank to top up with at home, I just haven't spent the money.

Much like the running premium fuel in your 87 octane rated car. Does it help? No, certainly not enough to offset the cost. The extra detergents will help clean things, but that's about it.

So it's up to the individual to make up their own mind. It it worth it? I think yes, provided you don't pay through the nose for it. Will it perform miracles and net you 10MPG, no.

That's partially true in Oshawa. It's free if you purchased the tires from that vendor, otherwise others will charge for a top up.
