Towing a 5th Wheel with a 5.5ft Short Bed

So I just picked up our new baby, a 2015 Rockwood 8281ws. I'm not going to say I wasn't nervous about my tow vehicles (2011 Silverado 5.5 Short Bed) clearance but everything worked out as advertised by Forest River. The new Reese Revolution Hitch saved me from purchasing a slider and a new tow vehicle.

Very Nice. Good luck with the new unit. And yes the Reese Revolution works very well. Been using mine for three seasons. No issues.

I can sympathize with you. The place I have had problems so far is backing into a sight where your jackknifed slightly with the front corner of trailer very close to the back window and the back tire of your TV drops in a hole. Just be careful. Have fun!

Looks like a nice set up. We have the 5.3 6 speed in our chev and we do ok. Headwinds and big hills strain her a bit but we just take it easy. What's in your tow vehicle?

I have a 5.0 with the tow package. Cool weather towing has been great but this weekend the heat index was above a 100. My tranny got a little warm towing to Orange Beach AL from MS. I am officially looking for a 3/4 ton.

I am towing the 8280ws with a 2014 Ford Supercrew 5.0 with a short bed and have not had any issues yet. Was at a site this past weekend that was uphill. The RV got close to the cab but never touched. As far as towing, the 1/2 ton does better than I expected. The tranny gets to 204 on the bigger hills but typically runs around 201. Normally runs at 197 when not towing. We stay in Michigan so I have no plans for upgrading the TV.

Congrats on the new rig, I know the feeling, just bought a 8280ss and am pulling with a 2012 Tundra Crewmax 5-1/2 ft bed also. I was nervous also and wondered about tight turns. I have a Venture Extended box on 5th wheel and a 16K Drawtite hitch. No problems so far and have not used the slider at all. Good luck and safe travels

box. Works for me
