I thought that the cable should be RG-6, but I guess they could have ran RG-59 if it's truly smaller than RG-6. Once you figure out which it is, you can get a connector and crimper pretty inexpensively that should do a fairly decent job of re-terminating the cable.
If you're not familiar with terminating coax cable, watch a few Youtube videos and make sure you trim back the shield properly, and don't nick the center conductor.
