Ultra Lite TT 2304 hitch ball question

Hello,

I recently purchased a 2007 Rockwood Ultra Lite Travel Trailer model 2304. I was reading through the owners manual and I saw that it mentioned a 2 5/16" ball was needed to tow the trailer. I previously towed the trailer home after buying it with a 2" ball. I emailed Forest River about this asking them which one was correct the 2" or 2 5/16" ball and they replied back saying everything they make is for the 2 5/16" ball size. So I went ahead and bought a 2 5/16" ball size and mounted it onto my hitch and now the trailer won't connect to it since it appears the 2 5/16" ball size is larger than what the trailer is expecting. I'm not sure if I'm missing something or if I should just use the 2" ball and not worry about this any more. I was hoping someone had some advice or maybe someone else has the same trailer and had some feedback on what size ball their trailer takes.

Thanks

We just bought a 2016 2304. It takes a 2 5/16" ball. Your's should too. I would examine the trailer side of the hitch for an adjustment.

I have pulled TT''s before with a 2" ball and nothing bad happened. But, that was because I had a boat trailer that took a 2" ball and I forgot, just lucky.

2" vs 2 5/16 ball

It should be a 2 5/16" ball receiver on your trailer. The only RV trailer I have see in recent years with a 2" ball is pop up. With that said consider the following:
1. The king pin for the lack of a better term in your trailer hitch is not releasing and moving back to allow the ball to slip on. WD 40 and a hammer handle prying it back while lifting up on the latch may work.
2. A previous owner had damaged the original hitch and replaced it with a 2". Not a major issue as long as the trailer weight is safe for a 2" ball.
3. It is highly unlikely that it was mistakenly installed at the factory. I would assume all their handling equipment is 2 5/16" and they would have notice pretty quickly the size difference and not let it go.
4. Last but not least don't try to tow in any distance until you get it figured out. A 2" ball will pull a 2 5/16" hitch around alright until you try to stop or cause the front of the trailer go pitch up and it will jump off the ball.

One last thing, your hitch could be stamped with the ball size on it somewhere but not always.

Just my two cents

Usually the hitch will say what size ball it requires. Usually stamped somewhere near the hitch lock.

I looked near the hitch last night and i did see a stamp on the metal mentioning a 2 inch ball. I have attached pictures of what I saw. So since I see this mention of a 2 inch ball should I just assume that one of the previous owners must have replaced it witch a 2 inch hitch? So when I buy my weight distribution hitch I'll just have to look for a 2 inch one.

The proof is in the stamping. You can buy any WDH, you just need to purchase a 2 inch ball to go with it

I would go with the size that the factory recommends.

Looks to me like the GVWR would be very close to being over the recommended weight of the 2" hitch ?

Here are the specs on the new 2304...

That's a 10 year old TT that were 7'6" wide then, not the current 8' wide.

Pretty clear from the stamping on my copy of your picture. Says 2 inch ball.

Remember guys, that is a ten year old trailer and according to NASA only about 3490 dry weight. A light WDH with Two inch ball-- make sure the ball has good big threaded shaft --- they make some stupidly skinny ones ,. And should tow like a baby buggy. 25/16 is today. Obviously Ren years ago it was 2 inch. Have fun.

Our 2012 Minilite 2109s has a 2" coupler. That surprised me when I picked it up because our previous '93 model Coachman had the larger coupler. Dealer said many of the newer (at the time), Minilites used the 2" size.

Its a non issue. You can go to etrailer and buy a 2" ball with a 1" shank thats rated for 12K GTW.......its not the size of your balls but the strength of your shank.
