Dave, weighed truck first loaded then hitched up and drove back to get Pin weight. The scale is one plate and certified as well. The individual weights are measured wheels on/ off the plate.

Joe, Same here. I deducted the weight of a full tank of water from my calculations. When I weighed it last summer same loading the tank was empty and comes close to what I have now.

I am sure you are disappointed the pin weight is more than advertised. Still if it "pulled great" as you say and you just completed 3000 miles why do you feel you must act now?
Our 8285 has an advertised pin of 1187 what it is going down the road is unknown.
I am interested in what is driving you to act (potentially change tv or rv) now. Particularly after a successful 3 k shakedown tow to Niagara?
Hoping old coot chimes in on this one as I value his insight as well.

I too would be interested in knowing why he would want to make a change. As you can see from my sig I too have a Tundra pulling a 8289WS with a little over 3k miles of towing, so far all is well. Oil, Trans and diff are serviced every spring, about twice or more often than the book recommends. Prior to the 8289 We pulled a `08 Cougar 291RLS 5r, it's GVWR was 10.3k, 1k more than the 8289. Had more than 20K miles towing the Cougar with this same Tundra. Looking forward to many more miles with this setup. When I'm ready to change trucks would I go 3/4 or 1 ton, don't know can't answer that now but maybe not. The Tundra is paid for so as long as I get good service out of it I'll keep pulling with it. When the time comes whatever I buy will be another cash deal.

Looked up some weights on my old Cougar. Loaded ready to camp it weighed 9640 at the scales and had a pin weight of 1830#. I am really anxious to get the 8289 weighed to know where the pin weight will fall. It's not loaded for camping now so it might be a day or two before I get it loaded and weigh it. Nearest cat scale is 45 miles away.

I am pulling an 2008 8285WS with a 3/4 ton Dodge diesel. Placard gross is 9350# - axles are 2 3500# (7000# total) - meaning that about 2300# of the gross must be on the pin.

I am currently about 6800# on the axles and 1800# on the pin - within the capabilities of the truck - but right at the edge of the axle capabilities. My question is/was where do I put the additional 500# if I wanted too.

At present the trailer axle deflection is used up - I am running fully loaded. Curious what axles others have.

So, why can you not continue? My only concern would be if you still had P tires on the truck.

I was experiencing some very violent bouncing on expansion joints. Sometimes I thought the rear wheels where going to come off the ground. It was particularly bad in South Carolina. Not fun at all. I shifted weight, filled airbags; couldn't figure it out. Then after a trip to the scale and find 1800+ lbs of pin weight; it's the only thing that makes sense...
Just too much weight. A couple of hundred mile trips here and there, but I won't go on another long trip with this setup.

Do you have light truck tires or P's? I had a nasty bounce coming off bridges etc but much improved with aired right up light truck tires. Trailer tires are at max too and this did improve "bounce" with my rig

On our way home from Florida this past February we did experience some violent bouncing on I-10 all the way thru Louisiana, worst road we have ever been on. Vehicle parts and broken down vehicles littered the highway. 70 MPH highway we slowed down from 60 to 30 in allot of places. Even semis slowed to a crawl on that highway. Don't think it would have made much difference if we had been pulling the 8289 with a 450.
Tundra has airbags, e-rated tires and Bilstein 5100 shocks

E rated filled to 75 psi all around. Airbags at 65lbs.

I run the E tires at 75 and my airbags 35 - 40. I had tried the airbags with as much as 70# in them, anything above 50# felt like the axel was bolted to the frame, no give at all. I generally run the bags at 30# unless on some bad roads.

Same here. I always ran at 35lbs on the airbags, but with this bad stretch of road I up'd the bags to 65 and it helped, but did not resolve it by any means...

Not much would resolve I-10 in Louisiana except major reconstruction, don't know about SC, had not been through there since late 60's. My next trip that would take me thru LA I think I will try going around that state because of there roads

Yep. I have a hard time inviting rvers to LA because of the bad highways. Low bid projects I guess.

Joe,
Was out by the cat scales today and got the Tundra weighed. Had a full tank of fuel, DW, our two dogs, tools and most of what we carry in the truck when ready to camp. Also the hitch is in the bed of the truck. Here is my weight ticket. Looks like I'm running a bit heavier than what I seen on your ticket. First chance I get I'll get the RV weighed

You really can't believe anything the manufacturer says about pin weight...
