Wheel bearing size

Getting ready to leave for our first really long trip. I was wondering if anyone here knew what size the wheel bearings are on a 2016 2504s. The stickers on the axles say 3000 pounds. I know that travel trailers don’t have the failures that boat trailers do, but I’m thinking about keeping spare bearings if can find out what size they are without taking one apart. Thanks. Jay

You will find that on a Long Trip if you have a Wheel bearing failure it will happen in the most "Inconvenient Location Possible"! To replace" Bearing Races" can be a challenge even in a shop! Just invest 63.00$ at E-Trailer and buy a "Complete Trailer Hub 3500 lb assy,10" Dia. 5 on 4-1/2 Item# 84546uc3-EZ ! Even if you have someone repair it for you all the "Parts" will be with You! Youroo!! If you want to "Chance" just buying bearing/Races/and Seals, use the same Item # and page down, all the part#s are there also!

Probably over kill but I carry a complete hub assembly and a set of races seals and bearing ready to go. figure if I lose a bearing I can make a quick repair with the hub and use the bearing when I get to the campground and now have another backup hub assembly.

Trailerparts4u.com will sell you Dexter parts. My 2017 2304ks uses BK2-100 bearing set. Give them a call. They are very helpful.

I also have a 2016 2504s.

Just pulled and repacked all my axels this weekend only to discover Dexter uses Chinese made bearings...... Ordered four sets of USA made Timken bearings and cups to replace. You will also need seals for each hub if you intend on replacing the bearings.

Dexter recommends repacking your axels every 12months/12,000miles.

Axel Bearings (Are replaced in sets of a cone and cup)

Cone Cup A. DIA B. DIA C. WIDTH
L44649 L44610 1.0625" 1.9800" 0.5600"
or.......
L68149 L68111 1.3775" 2.3612" 0.6250"

If you intend to replace your bearings you will also need seals. The correct seal part number for the EZ-Lube axles is (010-019-00) or the kit # K71-303-00 with two seals.

Dexter bearing repack video. Easy afternoon job with the right tools.

Thanks USGILT, it seems from your post that the outer bearing and race are smaller than the inner one. Jay

I started to inspect/repack my wheels this week. The second wheel I pulled had a damaged seal and grease on the brakes. It looks like it left the factory this way. There was no wear on the shoes, drum or the magnet. Not caused by E-Z Lube. There was enough grease in the hub, but it wasn’t filled as it would have been if the E-Z Lube was used.

A pair of self-adjusting brake assemblies was only $100. One set of shoes was $30. So I got the complete assemblies and an upgrade to self-adjusting brakes.

My biggest disappointment was the Timken bearings for my 6000# AL-KO axles was $50 per wheel, and almost $10 for a Dexter seal. One of outer races had marks that I didn’t like so new bearings are going in. There are cheaper bearing kits but I’m not sure of the quality. This is gonna run over $200 per axle, and I’m doing the work.

I haven’t looked at the other two wheels yet.

The first time I repacked my bearings I had 1 out of 3 seals that had failed as well. No damage but I must have caught it just in time. I have found some decent deals on ebay of all places for Timken bearings. You might want to give it a check, personally I feel much better having a USA bearing installed than one from China.

My personal opinion is that the main benefit is being able to inspect the bearing seals, bearings, and brakes which most of the time I do find something that needs repair or attention.

On the technical side, bearing grease, which is actually oil mixed with thickeners, does separate during long-term storage.(lay your grease gun on a shelf for 2-3 months and note the oil on the shelf) The oil separates from the thickeners, oil runs to the bottom, leaving only the thickeners in the bearings.

Your dexter axel manual highlights the reason bearings should be manually cleaned, inspected, and repacked. Without doing so there is no way to remove the hardened "thickeners" that remain after the oil is used up that was in the bearing grease. By removing the "old" grease that may have metal particles, contaminants, etc that could wear your bearings and spindle shaft quicker.
