Two AC's are going to do you no good without 50 amp service. You are looking at a fortune to upgrade a used trailer to 50 amp service and adding a second AC. We have one 13.5 AC and get by. It may be 88 inside the trailer at times, but that is better than 105 and it cools down pretty fast after the scorching sun goes down.

I've read some guys have installed a second AC and put it on a separate 20A circuit so they use 2 shore power cords when they camp, a 30A and a 20A but you're right to modify the power system on the camper to be 50A instead of 30A seems like it would be very expensive.

Thank you for an answer to a big concern we have. We leave our two large dogs in the camper. We came back one hot afternoon to find the ac off. Breaker had tripped. They were fine but very warm and we were glad we got back when we did. We were trying to find a solution should the electric go out again. The 12v fan is a good idea. Thank you.

I ordered mine with the 13.5, kinda wish I would have got the 15.0. Just because! Knowing full well that discharge air temperature is directly related to the relative humidity, I,m going to be operating an electronic dehumidifier to help pull some additional moisture out of the "cabin" and see if that doesn't improve the effiencency of the AC. The specs on the unit were 14 x8 x6, 6 lbs, rated for 2200 cu ft space, 2.6A,2 l cap. 20 oz/day at 80% humidity. Got it toward end of season when humidity was lower, but I can see it draws out the water. Now in fall season with heat on, I can see that the condensation on the windows is gone.

Thanks everyone all for the great advice!

From all I have read, the A/C seems to be a personal choice for the most part. It seems everyone has different tolerances for heat and as it turns out my family and I keep our house around 78 degrees during the summer here in California and find that to be fine.

Having written that, we opted to get a single 15k BTU A/C because a dealer not too far away had a WJ3006WK on the lot with a 15k unit. It was at a great price, had all the options we wanted for sure and because heat doesn’t bother us too much we decided to go for it. If it would have had the 13.5k unit I would have passed.

Just remember the square footage of your camper will help you determine whether you need two ac or one. I have 3 slides there for I opted for the 2nd ac Best call I made. First V-lite only had two slides and one 15000 ac did fine but only two slides. Also ya got to remeber these things are no insulated like a house. Later RJD

In the heat of FL and TX one AC won't keep up.

Experience: at Flagler Beach the temperatures were above 100 in the shade. A single 13.5K ducted with my toy garage closed off and sealed would not keep up. The lowest it would pull it down to was 81 and that seemed like I shouldn't be running it that long. With the garage closed off it is like cooling a 22' trailer. Plus, I have added insulation under the entire floor and have Reflectix custom cut and ready for all windows. In that heat, I actually had it on all windows.

I will tell you how I plan to add a second AC if interested.

Our rig is black (34RL Work and Play), so take that into account when considering my response.

We had a "no shade" campsite over the Labor Day weekend, we were in northern Michigan, but the temps got up near 90 degrees.

As soon as we got home I added a second A/C unit to the bedroom.

Ours is a 50amp unit, but was not pre -wired for second A/C.

I may end up adding a 3rd unit, to the garage area? Time will tell.

Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

We take time to go on a camping trip, then can't sleep because it is too hot? Why risk it.

I will "home run" with 12awg romex from the second AC to the utility access area and terminate on a weatherproof plug on the side, like the one we have; probably a 30A; eventhough it only needs 20A. You keep the RV on 30A, distribution panel, EMS, and all. Then buy or make a 50A male to two 30A female adapter; a Y adapter. The trailer plugs into one 30A female the AC into the other. The beauty of it is you can choose which 50A phase is best. There can be quite a difference in voltage on the phases. The cost, beside the AC unit, is a little 12awg romex, a male RV connection, a cord, the Y adapter, and maybe a little wire mold to hide any exposed romex. Easy Peasy.

All has been well with the single 15k btu AC until today... We are in St Louis, arrived around 4pm in 90+ degree heat and the WJ did not cool down until the sun was almost down. So, I am thinking of adding a 9000 btu unit in the bedroom where the fantastic fan is located. So far all of the RV parks we have been to, have a 30amp and a 20amp next to each other, (when we get a 30amp service). Since the 9000 btu unit will run off a 15amp circuit, I will just run an extension cord to the 20amp outlet.

Anyone done this before? Is installing the unit in the bedroom vent just a matter of wiring and mounting, no mounting mods needed, just some wiring to get the 120vac to the vent opening?

In the next 2 days, going to go to the hardware store and buy some reflextix to install on the windows, I can tell that will help, I could feel the heat coming through the windows...
Thanks,
GECTisMe

You are right about the windows letting in heat. I made some black out curtains for our big window in the back. Also added the pillow like covers over the vents. This has helped keep the heat out and the cool in. In Ohio 90 degrees heat and humidity our 13000 single unit will keep the camper about 78 which is ok until evening then it drops to 75 where we keep it set.
