I'm wondering too if the tension on the knobs that would hold the awning in the lowered side position (for rain runoff) doesn't have a great bearing on this condition. I could see where having both really loose would let the awning freely slide, but, just snug enough to slip/slide would hold it in place while deploying until sufficient force was exerted by the gas shocks to overcome that tension in one big hurry. BANG!

I get it in our 2304s regularly. Bugs the wife but after watching what is happening, it really doesn't look like much to worry about.
