In Fonzies pic (in case you don't know, because some people don't) the valve is OPEN when the long part of the valve handle is parallel to the hose and valve body and is CLOSED when the long part of the valve handle is perpendicular to the hose and valve body. So in the pic, the bottom (cold water in) and top (hot water out) valves are OPEN and the middle (bypass) valve is CLOSED. (This is as they should be when you are NOT in winter bypass mode.) (My wife can't seem to remember this for my lawnmower's gas valve; she's always asking me which way is OPEN!)
