Directions to Cherokee, NC

Heading to Cherokee, NC, via I-40 from the east, and I'm a little confused. Both Google Maps and Mapquest want to take me via US 19 right through the middle of Maggie Valley, and I know that road between Maggie Valley and Cherokee is curvy and narrow. I've driven it many times without a camper.

I'm pretty sure there's a four-lane route via Waynesville, but I can't understand why the mapping programs I'm looking at do not include it. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.
