Fresh Water Tank

On my 2014 Surveyor Cadet 189 the water pump starts sucking air with about 8 gallons of water still in the tank. I need to either extend the pick up tube or tie into the drain tube. I have not opened the bottom of the trailer by dropping the under trailer panels yet but it looks like I will have to to get to the tank. Has anyone done this?

I would take it back to the dealer.
Why don't you?

Because it's a three hour drive and getting FR to cover it takes a lot of time and effort. If I can just "tee" into the drain line I could access all the water in the tank. I need instructions of how to do it.

My pump supply is also on the side of the tank. It is about 3" above the bottom of the tank. I have almost 20 gallons left in a 46 gallon tank when pump sucks air...crazy! Of course I want to do this mod. So my question to youroo, choochooman74, and any others who have done it is, over time have you had any problems with sucking sediment into your pump. I do have a screen type filter on my pump

I did this mod on my then-new Rockwood 2304 in the summer of 2010. It made no sense to me to not have use of at least 1/3 of the tank capacity & we do a fair percentage of our camping dry. Very simply, the original pump hose location was plugged & a metal T is at the bottom of the tank connected to the drain location, with the supply line run from the T. I have never had any problem with sucking sediment. I also ensure the tank is fully drained after each use & do use a filter on the fill hose at all times when I fill the tank.

Thanks Char_n_Kath. Do you have a link to the filter you use on the fill hose?

Oldcat - try this link. This is the type of filter I use & it is designed to connect to a standard hose. I took the short hose that came with it, cut off the male end & use the hose to insert into the fresh fill to make filling easier. I'm certain you can find something similar at local RV supply stores.

One note of caution - I find that the first bit of water that comes out of a new filter is black from essentially flushing the carbon filter - so run some water first to clean the filter & then fill your tank.
