if i have the tailgaiter and required box i stand it up behind the tv on my lacrosse with similar setup......thats the only way it dont stick out way past the tv.....only draw is you have to "aim" the remote just right to change the channel

the benefit of using the tripod and lnb is that i can use a uhf box and put it in the bedroom out of the way AND i can have a dual tuner box so we can watch diff prog in diff rooms (and have access to ALL the channels on all dish sat feeds)...it can be more tedious to set up.....that tailgaiter is a lazy mans dream....LOL

Location for Dish receiver

I know nothing about dish or direct tv but plan on purchasing a unit this summer. The last post sounded like good information but was almost written in code. Could you be more explicit about model and carrier. I like the idea of being able to put the unit out of site but not sure what to purchase. Please help

everything referenced was in regards to dish network brand service.

the "tailgater" is a small portable self contained dish unit that is self aiming and only required running one cable to the input (either your trailer if equiped or directly to the converter box)

the "tailgater" system is however only compatible with certain dish converter boxes. Unfortunantly those boxes are not capable of using "uhf" or radio frequency for remote operation....they work on infra red only....much like your tv remote at home...infra red is line of sight..you have to be able to see the box for the remote to work...

UHF uses an antenna on the box...and the remote sends a radio signal to operate and will work through walls etc

since the tailgaiter does not support these boxes, you have to use a full size dish satellite on a tripod and aim it manually ...

the benefit is you can place the box out of the way, AND you can power multiple boxes in diff rooms if you want....

i dont know if direct tv has these options or not....

THIS IS NOT RECOMMENDED:
But, I plugged my 5'er into 220V earlier in my ownership. Almost a year ago. I fried the television, microwave, fireplace and converter. I used to have a Toshiba 32" TV in the corner above the fireplace of my 32RCTS-6. That 32" Toshiba filled the entire corner space and had I needed to put my Dish receiver under the TV, I wouldn't have been able to do so and would have had the same issues as the OP. But, the replacement TV, is actually better than the original 32" Toshiba and I now have about a 4" gap at the bottom of the TV to sit the receiver on the shelf. Maybe blowing up the television with 220V wasn't such a bad thing after all.

If you do a search for "IR repeaters" you will find several products that will allow you to put the receiver where you do not have line of sight.

this is another option, and i have extensive experience in wiring in repeater systems in residential settings....although given the OP statement that my dish and UHF description was technical, i diddnt figure he would want to delve into messing with an ir repeater eye and powersupply for his trailer....

in any case, if this is the route anyone is interested in, i get a lot of electronic supplys (the buffalo brand usually for ir stuff) from here... www.partsexpress.com

they do have plug n play setups as well....with the newer led tvs make sure you get an eye that wont have interference issues!

good luck!

I spent the morning doing research on the receivers and it is tough to find one with the UHF remote with out more features than I want or probably need. We don't watch a lot of TV but we doing enjoy football and Sunday morning on CBS. Because Digital Antenna seem to not work well where we camp we normally just take along DVD to watch if the weather turns bad or at nights. We are on cable at home so the satellite would just be for the camper. Since we are in no hurry I will just keep researching. Thanks for your helpful comments.

For what you intend Then it may be easier to deal with the non uhf reciever an a tailgater...you can buy programming as needed that way. There are remote extender type products that may work as well....its unfortunant the tailgater only works with a select few boxes....it really is a nice piece for the cost...

sent from fat fingers with no regard to grammer via a space dish thingy
