Noisy Radio

Hi all,

I've heard that the radios in the Surveyors were troublesome prior to the 2010 year. Well, the radio in my new 2010 trailer emits a fairly loud constant buzz when its on. I'm planning to have my dealer look at it, but considering the history of the poor radios, is this as good as it gets, or should I expect to have better quality? Are there aftermarket options out there?

Thanks,
Cory

Hi Cory, we had the same problem with noise in our Concertone radio in our new Rockwood anytime it was hooked to shore power. However the noise wouldn't be there if just running off of the batteries. As suggested by others I installed chokes or as some call them noise suppressor's. Check my previous posts where I listed the parts #'s that I bought from Radio Shack.

Thanks to you both for the quick response! I just want to clarify that the noise was coming from the actual stereo itself and not through the speakers, was that your situation as well emptypockets?

If so, I'll definitely have a look at the noise suppressors

Thanks again...

Try grounding the radio's metal cabinet to a good ground in the trailer. If an electrical junction box is not plastic, try that. Other than that, buy a filter from Radio Shack.

Just a hint as to the trouble, mine was buzzing loudly as well and then went away. So i forgot about it, recently i looked at attaching an ipod to the stereo and i had to remove it from the wall. Anyway when i replaced the unit back in it's housing again the buzzing was back. hmmm? i losened one screw on the housing and the buzz went away. I'm happy again! Give it a try guys it may be as simple as that. Also to access the stereo remove two black strips on either side of the radio. you'll need a flat top screw driver to depress the two tabs along the side and they pop right off. The screw on the bottom right corner was the problem, as to why it does this i don't know.

I had the one in my 2010 replaced under warranty because it only worked sporadically. The guys who replaced it said the hissing noise I was hearing in both the old one (when it worked) and the new one was the fan inside the unit. At least in my case, the noise was not coming through the speakers. They said Forest River does not consider a loud fan to be a warranty issue. But it's still a piece of junk, in my opinion, and does not have a good sound. I will probably end up replacing it with a Jensen unit that I saw at Camping World.

Noisy Radio in Surveyor

Yes, the radio is a "pirce of junk". Mine was the same as MJones12, the small cooling fan was causing the noise. I cut a wire and stopped the fan. I have run the radio for hours in the Florida heat as well, no problem. The fan was not very efficent and the electronic components can take the heat, when it cooks, no real loss, I will deal with it if and when it happens. In the mean time, the radio is clear.

Our Concertone had a constant hiss. We replaced it with a Jensen AWM970. Well worth the change. I have a post on this board somewhere with pictures if you do a search.
