odor under bathroom sink

I am currently camping and we have been getting a bad odor from the bathroom. I first thought it was a P trap issue but it has persisted. This is only the second trip out since we bought it. The last trip we used the shower and everything else. I did empty the tanks after the last trip but later learned that I should not have left the black tank dry.

I have done some sniffing and it appears to be coming from under the sink from the P trap. He smell is the worst right at the trap. Can this go bad? The smell from the sink itself smells fine so that would tell me that the trap is working.

What else can I check?

Does your pipe come up to a "t" or "y" with one side going to the "p" trap and the other going to what looks like a cap with some holes around it? This "cap" is a vent, is it there? I dont see any info about your camper but new or old it may not be working right, or stuck open allowing the odors to come up.

yes. Off the trap is a T and one side goes down but the other goes up and looks like it is capped. Should I try and unscrew the cap to see what is there? I worried about un-doing the trap and really stinkjng up the camper ;(

Like I said, the vent looks like a cap. You can unscrew it and go get a new one and see if this helps your problem if you want. Your favorite hardware store should have a new vent on hand.

Thanks for the help. I picked up 2 at Ace today. The one I removed did not have a spring inside like the 2 I bought. Is this why it failed or do some come with and some without. I would assume the spring should be there...

I will have to wait to see what happens the next time we go out or do some home camping.

These vents are APITA. They fail continually and I cannot believe they are even allowed. replace mine almost annually. Proper way would be to vent thru the roof or sidewall.

I think they all should have a spring, but who knows how its designed. Hope it fixes it for you. Post back and let us know.
