Outdoor Kitchen Mod: 17" Blackstone

Purchasing our trailer, the outdoor kitchen with a mini fridge, metal cabinetry, plumbed drain sink and the Surveyor supplied Aussie grill was one of the biggest selling points that sealed the purchase.

Fast forward to two seasons later, we've used the trailer about 50 nights and the BBQ regularly gets used for burgers, hotdogs and chicken. We also often use a Lodge cast iron flat 16x9 griddle. While the BBQ works ok with the griddle, clean up (think bacon grease) is a cumbersome, time consuming process that requires nearly full breakdown of the BBQ.

For Christmas, Santa brought me a 17" Blacstone griddle and the modification bug bit me. So, today I got outside and got the trailer ready for this season.

In short, I removed the BBQ, drilled (4) 7/8" holes for the feet, removed some metal and now both the griddle and 2 burner campstove live on the slide.

We bought a 17" Blackstone as well. Going to be trying it out on our next trip in a month.

Nice mod clarkbre! Santa brought me a Blackstone 17" griddle for Christmas too. I can't wait for camping season to get here so that I can use it.

Those griddles are great! We have one as well that gets used at least once daily. I can’t tell from pics but was there propane from the old grill to tap into? That’s my next mod is to put a quick connect on the side of the trailer for our griddle. Nice mod!

Was thinking about putting in the mod for a quick disconnect. We carry a small 1 gallon propane tank to fuel our grill so we will use that same tank for the griddle.

Don't really want a 20 foot lp hose in the campsite when you can put that small tank right next to where you use it.

Yes. The Aussie BBQ is a low pressure propane unit that connected to the propane quick connect under the trailer underneath the sink. The quick connect is mounted to the trailer frame itself.

In order to run the Blackstone off the quick connect on the trailer, I will have to purchase a $24.99 part from Propanegear.com My plan is to use the existing hose that came with the trailer and just purchase the L adapter.

Looking at the Blackstone Grill now.

Makes sense. We setup a table under our awning for the grill and other essentials like the coffee pot etc. The propane line is literally 3 feet from there so it makes sense for us.

I purchase a Blackstone 17 inch griddle to use with our 5th wheel. After getting the cooking surface seasoned, I took the griddle into the house to just try it out, I liked it so much that it now sits on the kitchen counter top where I cook my breakfast. I will have to buy another for the camper.

Do you use the entire Blackstone indoors or just the upper metal griddle on a gas stovetop?

For your safety, tell me it's on a stove top.

Blackstone griddle

I have the whole griddle sitting my the countertop, why are you concerned with my safety?

The Blackstone's are for outdoor use only. The concern is probably for carbon monoxide emissions.

Correct. For you and your family's safety, please use it outside.

You tell me what the difference is between a four burner gas cook stove sitting in my kitchen cooking a full blown dinner and a small gas griddle cooking some ham & eggs. Should I move the gas cook stove outside also. PS: When I am cooking I have the exhaust fan on, which is located above the cooking area.

No, with your logic and wisdom, just move your propane bbq inside as well...

As long as you put the Blackstone under an operating hood, there shouldn't be an issue. If it isn't, all bets are off.

Make sure there is a CO detector nearby.

This is awesome! I was very disappointed with the Aussie grill myself. I miss have the two burners in the outdoor kitchen. I just bought the 17" Blackstone from Wall-Mart, but it looks like the grease tray is in the rear now. Will there be enough room back there to access the grease tray when its mounted? Please let me know. Thanks for the great idea!

I just bought the 17" a couple weeks ago and the grease tray is in the front by the knob.

No. The way mine is mounted, there is about an inch between the rear metal on the slide and the back of the Blackstone. I really wanted a 22" but for my application the grease trap needed to be in front. The cooking surface is still about 1 1/2 times the size of the Aussie and it heats more evenly.

Also to note, mine isn't so much mounted as it is set in the holes I drilled on the metal slide. With the hose disconnected I can easily just lift it off.

WalMart does have a version that has the grease tray on the back.

I bought from Dicks because the tray is on the front - which I wanted.
