You have to have the switch INSIDE your rig turned on to use the propane. It allows 12v to get to your water heater to run the control board and the ignitor when using propane.

The switch outside turns on the 110 to use the electric heating element. If you're using propane, the outside switch should be in the off position.

Or... if you want to heat up your water quickly between showers you can run both the propane AND the electric element both at the same time.

So yes. You don't have to have the gas on when you're on shore power.

Thanks. I'll give elect. A try and see if my element works.
I did mean propane too. Don't know why I kept saying gas.

Instead of digging around for the switch on the water heater, you can turn it on and off at the circut breaker inside. Just make sure its turned OFF when there is no water in the system and you are plugged in or you will burn it out instantly.

I keep both on when camping. The electric will keep it hot under low use and the propane only kicks on under heavy use.

Just don't forget to turn it off at the end of your trip
