This is what I towed. Trailer was 2000 and kubota was 3500 not to mention countless loads of fire wood in a 4000 lb empty dump trailer

Towing a full sized, upright camper is different that towing a tractor on a trailer, even though the weight may be the same. Any truck is going to have a harder time pulling a camper, with the frontal wind resistance, with side winds affecting sway.

I guess you mean that you will getting a Reese Dual Cam with the SV 264 ?? Looks like the WDH used in the picture is not the Dual Cam .

Yes I ordered the dual cam for the camper. With the flat trailer it was just a weight distribution setup standard. I have personally met 2 different people with the exact same truck and camper that I have. They say it tows like a dream and they put a lot of miles on them. One person uses the dual cam setup with airbags and the other just has standard weight distribution and no suspension assist. I personally have timbrens on the truck and the 4 leaf and will be using the Reese dual cam setup. I have even towed a car trailer with a race car in it and the truck did fine. Biggest complaint was the tongue was over 800lbs with no weight distribution. It is all relative to where you live and what you want to accomplish. If you look at the wheel base of my truck compared to a dodge quad cab short bed with a 4.7L, the tacoma is not much different except for weight. Hp and length and width are almost equal.

For what it’s worth, don’t forget about the weight carrying capacity of your truck. You will find it on the truck door sticker.
I have a 264 and I am towing it with a Ford F-150. The truck will tow 11,300 Lbs., but the weight carrying capacity of my truck is 1964 Lbs.
I exceeded my weight carrying capacity because of all the gear I put in the truck bed, my load was;
Two people & dogs at 500 Lbs.
Trailer tough load 600 Lbs.
Generator 85 Lbs.
26 Gal of gas 220 Lbs.
20 Gal of water 170 Lbs.
125 Qt Cooler filled 260 Lbs.
Outboard motor at 80 Lbs.
Boat Loader at 200 Lbs.
Boat at 300 Lbs.
Battery 50 Lbs.
Stuff. 100 Lbs.
Total at 2565 Lbs.
I plan to add a rear leaf to each spring in the back.

The truck has the new Ecoboost engine, lots of power but it doesn’t get the advertised gas mileage.
Last trip was to North Western Ontario, 1672 miles one way.
The fuel mileage was 9.5 going uphill and 9.5 going downhill.
Seriously, going through West Virginia it was a little worse, maybe 8.5, but the average was 9.5 MPG.
The truck gets 16.5 MPG on the interstate by itself.

Forget mileage. Towing kills mileage.
Adding gizmos will not increase payload capacity.
The sticker on the door can be used against you in a court of law.

Great setup Mike, I want the same camper but not sure I want to spring for the extra cash.
I am glad you had no trouble pulling it, I have the same truck as you, Tacoma double cab and long bed with towing package.
What is the dry weight on your camper?
Thanks

Mike, nice looking combo !!
Comparing the photos of your truck with camper, vs. the truck with the cargo carrier and equipment trailer, the truck appears to have the front end raised and the back end squatting more with the camper. Have you done either the fender measurements, or better yet, done some weigh-ins to make sure your WDH is setup correctly ???

Mtguy, I was wondering the same thing, I mentioned I have the same truck but I just don't think I can pull that much camper so I leaning toward one 4,500 dry and that worries me.
However in the day being a long time camper I had an old Astro Van 6 cyl 4.o ltr and towed an old prowler 26 foot inside length and had no problems towing it.
I grant you gone up those hills in WV, VA and NC it took a hit and I could only go around 45 max.
That weight had to have been around 5,600 dry, it was a Prowler. I wouldn't try that load with a 6 cyl now.

I'm doing a little better than that pulling a Surveyor 235. We got 11 mpg total trip average on a 3,000 mile towing trip last year (MN to Louisiana and back). Towed at 60 mph. My overall mileage for the last 6,000 miles (not towing) is 18.5 mpg; a mix of 60% highway and 40% suburban/urban. This includes the reduced mileage effects of a MN winter. Over the summer, my average was 20.5 mpg. But I don't drive over 65 mph.

I have the 2014 SV264 and pulled it very well with a 2009 Yukon Hybrid with a tow rating of 6000 lbs. and a 6.0 engine. Just purchased a 2016 Yukon with a hugher tow rating but a 5.3 engine. I expect that it will do just as well.
My problems with the camper was involved it being too dark inside and had LEDs put in. lso had a stubborn leak that took almost a year to find and fix. The latch cup of the slam Cargo door had a bad rubber gasket seal. I wa at my wits end having the dealer find and fix. Also had to have a replacement tongue jack as th eone that came with it quit working. Now that I have had the camper 2 years last August 13th., I am hopeful that no more problems crop up. Love the curved roof/inside ceiling which gives more headroom.

I was going to sell mine and buy a nicer unit, but the market is tanking... there may be a few really good deals in a few months if current economic trends continue.
