SV291 Hot Water Heater

Hi, I guess I'm just getting old, but I can't remember if the light next to the hot water heater switch in front of the sink stays on when it is being heated with gas. I finally opened it up last week and after filling the HW tank, I flipped the switch and the light came on and the tank heated up. A while later I looked and even though there was hot water, the light was off. I turned the switch off and the next day, turned it on again and the light came on. I didn't leave the heater on in case something is messed up as I wasn't able to monitor it. So, my question is: does the light stay on, or did I trip a reset and after everything cooled, it worked again? I did notice that the heater seemed hot on the outside and I don't remember that from last year. I'm wondering if maybe there is a thermostat that is not working. It is a 2007 SV291.

thanks,
Greg

My hot water heater light only comes on if the gas burner is
trying to light OR it has faulted out.
In other words, if I turn on my gas switch, it glows briefly until
the burner fires up and then the light goes out while the burner
is heating. Once the tank is hot and the burner shuts off the
light stays off until it decides to heat again. Then it glows
again only as long as it takes the ignitor to light the burner.

Yours may be wired to light up and stay on while the burner
is burning??

My heater also feels warm on the outside when it's heated.
If your heater were over heating you'd likely see steam or water
coming out the pop off valve on the tank.
My guess is you're fine.

Thanks for the responses. I will be using it next week and will be able to check it out. I suspect you are correct. If not, watch for a big boom in Ludington in Northern Michigan next thursday.

thanks again,
Greg
