unable to open tailgate!
With our 240 Surveyor Sport hooked to our 1500 Ram P/U we are unable to open the tailgate even close to halfway. Our dog rides in the back of the truck and we like for her to be able to get out at each stop. It would necessitate disconnecting the ball hitch, chains and wiring and pulling ahead several feet to accomplish this.
I am going to move the electric jack that is mounted ahead of the propane tanks.. A piece of channel iron across the frame behind the tanks is going to be the new location for the jack mount. Lite won't be any use but I never needed it anyhow.
If there is any interest I will post some pictures.

Any chance you could unbolt it and turn it 90 degrees to have enough room for the tailgate to clear the jack head? I have the same issue but no dog in the truck bed.

TOYOTA does the same thing/ by putting the hitch closer to the rear axle they can have a higher tow weight capacity. Look at the dodge duellys too rear wheels almost touch rear bumper; it's all a numbers game.

Ours wouldn't clear the jack like you say, once I installed a new weight distribution hitch with the long draw bar it clear but just barely. The rig has to be straight on or it will contact.

Mine does not clear the jack also however I can live with that you may look into getting a different tailgate that has the cut out for the jack or the pin on a fifth wheel. Jake rides in the cab with me

When I had an electric jack my tailgate would not open all the way either. Once I put my manual crank jack back on, I could open it fine. It needs to be more or less parallel, but it opens completely. The manual crank actually makes lik a 'z' so that the part your grip with your hand goes under the tailgate when open. If you are willing to switch, it is an easy and cheap fix. I'm sure someone would gladly swap jacks with you.

I have the same issue with my Ram, I keep a thick blanket to put on the jack and just rest the tailgate on it. I lift them back in the back when we load. Two GSD's @85+ pounds each. I need a ramp or something. Good luck, I'll be following for any other ideas.

I replaced my FIC Lippert jack with a BullDog 3500, it's shorter and now I can open my Suburban Liftgate. Maybe a shorter Jack helps you?

I was going to suggest a fifth wheel tailgate. That should clear the jack.
Of course, moving the jack should work too.

Dogs in pickups.
I won't get into a discussion with you guys. I'm an animal lover and I would never place an animal in a place that they could get hurt, i.e the bed of a pickup. You don't put dogs back there for the same reason you don't let children ride back there, or do you?

I rode in the back of trucks for years as a kid. No seat belts either just saying!
Any ways get a Hensley, that will give you plenty of space for the tailgate. It will tow better for Fido too.

I have the same problem and No you can't. The geniuses that designed the mount did not use a 120 degree pattern. Two will line up, but the third is off by about a quarter of an inch. I took the jack head apart and found no way to rotate the motor. Oh well, life goes on.
