I have traveled to Florida via Arkansas and back with my BMW in there and have had just the two vents open. I doubt wind could open these vents if they are part way open as I find it very difficult to open them! Front one is high under the awning so I keep it open at all times and the rear one just when it is not raining, usually with the rear edge open.
Never had no smell or dust entry as far as I can tell and I use the trailer when I travel for stops and eating and sleeping. I just wish I could devise a way to keep them wider open during rain at campgrounds.
BTW: I have screens on mine on the inside to keep the bugs out. Made with plastic mesh and Velcro - not fancy but they work.
