Chassis/engine maintenance recommendations wanted

There's probably an answer to my question out there but darned if I could find it. We bought a 2012 Sunseeker 2250 on a Chevy 4500 with the 6.0L Vortec engine in October. It only had 10,200 miles on it and we've added another thousand to it since then.

I'm not sure what the maintenance schedule is or what maintenance has been done but would like to do what is reasonable and prudent prior to a long trip we have planned in a couple of months. I figure an oil/filter change is the minimum I should do. What about a cooling system flush and fill? Transmission service?

I would like to know what is reasonable from you seasoned folks out there rather than have the service people sell me work I don't need.

Thanks in advance.

Lee

Good question! I can't wait for the answers. I am in a simular situation. I bought my my 2011 Georgetown 300 in August -- had 11,000 miles on it then and I've put on another 2000 since. I have no idea when it had its last oil change. Or what the change frequency should be. My expedition has a frequency of 7500 miles. First thing I'm going to do before my next trip is to get an oil change. I'm a Good Sam member and will be getting their roadside assistance plan too. I'm ready to renew my insurance too and just found out yesterday I spent $900 too much last year by not getting the storage discount 😕 I'm not making that mistake again!!
I have to find out what the capacities are.

For either or you posting so far.....

Your mileages are similar, and when in doubt....do it. An oil, lube, and filter is cheap insurance compared to not knowing. And....given that you're both PROBABLY running regular oil, as opposed to semi or full synthetic, the intervals for a very long time were....oil/filter change every 3000 miles. Did your previous owners tow anything? climb hills and mountains?

3000 miles may be conservative, but certainly no more than 5000 miles. And...if you get to a specific mileage on the odometer, multiples of every 5000 miles are easy to calculate.

Brakes should not be an issue. How do they sound, feel, perform?

All other fluids should be okay but should be checked for levels and strengths.

I'm no mechanic, but these are the most obvious things to check.

Enjoy your travels.

Brakes - no sound - feel good -- no problem w/ performance.
That's what I was thinking. Only other concern might be generator. Though doesn't have much time on it. Wonder if oil change companies can do motor homes. Think i might just buy an oil change pan and do it myself. Then again, I'm a pretty big guy. 😊 I used to do it for a living but have since sold my ramps. I hated doing oil changes as a business particularly during a hot summer!

Thanks Kenandterry. That's pretty much what I was thinking.

Not knowing what the previous owner did, an oil change and filter would have been done the day I got it home. The coolant should be changed based on age not miles so it is due. A lot of good ideas on what oil is best on this forum. I use Mobile One, oil and filters, on everything with an engine. Any good full synthetic extended service oil is good in case you don't get it changed exactly on schedule.

Oil and coolant are cheap in comparison to problems. Go overboard on servicing.

No other fluids SHOULD need to be changed, very low mileage. As stated coolant on time. Me being me and what I do with our truck is ALL fluids once a year. Cheap insurance and I just feel better about it, overkill I know.

I usually change oil and filter after every trip. Also check all fluids and grease all fittings. Have KN air filter so just check. Tow a car on tow dolly.

Thanks for all the responses, they've helped me. I'll have the oil/filter changed and the coolant system flushed and filled and the rest of the fluids, and mechanics, checked out. Just my humble opinion but changing the oil after every trip seems very excessive, unless you're driving across an unpaved desert or something.

The oil change intervals should be listed in your owner's manual. Use the severe duty schedule. You may not be towing but the coach weight itself is as much as a pickup with the same engine would tow.
