We are life members of Goodsam and members of FMCA. Met some really nice folks that were in a 4x4 chapter of the FMCA down in Moab Utah a few years back. Can't say good or bad about either. FMCA has lots of chapters around the nation that align themselves to different interest such as the 4x4 chapter or Christians, or brand type. As I work weekends it doesn't really do us any good to join a chapter as we would never be able to attend any of the campout get togethers. Perhaps after we retire we will.
Basically we joined the Goodsam club to get the discount at the RV park we stay in while in Moab, it saved us double the cost of the yearly membership for the 10 days we stayed there each year. Then after 2 years they sent us an offer to become lifetime members and they would apply the previous 2 years dues to the cost.
FMCA does something that I really like which is that they have a volunteer program which allows members to offer camping at their house for either 1 night (passing through), more than one night if invited to stay longer, mechanic help and tools if you are in an area and need to work on your rig but don't have the expertise or pinch driver where members will drive your rig somewhere safe for you if you become incapacitated or hospitalized. I really like this and it could be a great way to meet some really great people and save money while traveling across the country. I only wished we had the room to invite others to stay as we would enjoy meeting fellow RVrs and giving them a place to stay.
