Setting up our new Recon to drag behind the MH.

I really like bells and whistles, so I found the roadmaster night hawk.


Not bad for $1,200.

Is it really, I mean really that much better than this? For a grand less.




I know.. there’s lots in between. But let’s talk design.
I know the collapsible ones stay on the mh. I know I’d have to find a place to put the solid frame style.

Anything else to sway me one direction or the other?

It’s hard enough, finding a baseplate that doesn’t hang down, but will work with my bumper. ( keeping my bumper)

Not so much "better" as the collapasable one is "easier".
With the fixed bar, it is a pain to hook up by yourself as it has to be perfectly aligned with your toad. Like hooking up a trailer, you'll need someone to guide you.
And when un-hooking, the rig and toad must be perfectly stright AND level or you'll never get the head off the hitch ball.. Any minor grade and the head will bind.
Strength isn't the issue, but ease of use is.

How many use a rock guard/shield?

Interesting, I didn't know Blue Ox made something like that. I am using a Blue Ox setup on my JKU and it works well but it is the collapsible bar type. I swapped out the factory bumper for a Rock Hard 4x4 bumper to avoid getting a base plate. I will add a winch and lights later on too. I believe your bumper already provides for that though so I understand wanting to keep it.

I already have my solution but that Blue Ox bar looks interesting if it is that cheap. I will follow this thread and see what others say just out of curiosity.

I didn't like the cheaper version! Used it once for about 30 miles unhooked the jeep and the wife drove it to our destination! ! Next trip had the blue ox $900 tow bar. No problems after 5years use!! Just one more connection banging around back there on the 2" ball .
