Finding Maxxis Tires

So I have been beating up the internet, reading everything I can find on replacement tires, 225x75 15s D rated. My going on 3 year old GY Marathons have about 18,000 miles with no problems, but after all my research it seems the consensus is Maxxis is the way to go.

Called local tire places which all have Marathons but nobody has Maxxis. Went to Maxxis web site and they say closest dealer is over 100 miles away. Hard to believe not one Maxxis dealer in South Florida.

3 questions:

Is it worth the 200 mile round trip towing camper to get the Maxxis over the Good Years?

If I go with the Maxxis, I would want to go with go with the E rated. How do I know if my rims are rated for the 85 psi that tire requires?

Can anybody tell me to go with the Marathons and save me the trip?

Thanks , Mark

Three years and 18,000 miles.

If it's not broke, don't fix it!

I'd just get a new set of the GY's

I ordered my Maxxis tires from DiscountTireDirect.com and had them shipped (for free, I think) to me. UPS delivered 3 of the 4. DTD opened a claim with UPS and sent a replacement the next day at no cost to me. I took them to the local Merchant tire and paid the guys a tip to mount 2 of them and actually paid for them to mount the other 2 the next day since it was a store manager who wrote up my work order. They didn't balance them- said that it would have take too much weight. Once of these days I'm going to take the camper to a truck shop and have them remove the wheels, and remount/balance them.

I'd also have no problems putting Marathons on my camper. The Maxxis edged them out in my selection process, but I would have been happy with Marathons, as well.

I got my Maxxis tires from E-bay. Free shipping, then I had Discount Tire mount them for me.

I had Americas Tire Store (same company as Discount Tire) order in the 'E' Maxxis and properly rated rims for me. Look on the inside of the rim, the pressure rating is stamped there. If your's are like mine was they won't handle the 'E' tires.

I did find Maxxis on ebay. And the closest Discount tire is about 100 miles. I'll look for a local installer. Man, why are these tires so hard to find?

If my rims are only rated at 65 psi and the E rated tires have a max pressure of 85, can I still run tires at 65 psi? I know I won't get the max load but will that cause any issues?

Thanks for the input. Discount Tires Direct will ship the Maxxis tires for $145 each to a local tire place who will mount and balance for about $20 each. I like the idea of the 10 ply load range E to replace my Marathons.

So I am ready to order the. Maxxis 225 75 15 E tires from Discount Tires Direct for $145 each and calling their listed installers who wanted about $20 a tire to install. On a whim I stop at the closest Good year dealer, who I have never dealt with to see if he will install he tires. He said he would install for $18 a tire and said he could order them for me. The Maxxis website listed their closest dealer about 100 miles from me.

I had him look up his price, which I figured would be way higher than my best web price. To my great surprise, he told me $132 a tire and out the door my final installed price will save me about $80 over buying over the web and having them installed. And best of all, I am buying from a local merchant.

So, I am getting 5 new Maxxis tires this morning.

The RIM maximum pressure should be stamped to the inside casting of the wheel, you will probably need to take the tire off to see this. Always do not exceed the maximum rim pressure regardless of what the max tire pressure is.

The tire guy and I searched the entire rim, inside and out, and could not find any markings at all.
