Welding

Does any one know a little about welding on TT I need to do some welding and some one told me that it could messup my bearings and some one told me that as long as i put the ground wire right next to were I'm welding i'll be alright.

Just take the bearings out. If you are worried. Also if your trailer is new I wouldn't weld anything on it. It would VOID your warranty.

As long as you connect the ground to the trailer frame, you should be ok, but if the trailer is still on warranty, any welding on the frame will void said warranty.

I've had 40 plus years in the welding & fabricating industry and I can assure you that welding will NOT ruin your bearings!!!!!!!!!!

I just cleaned and repacked the bearings now I have to set the brakes.

There is a theory that when welding on steel with bearings, an arc could create a spot on a bearing that would ruin it. It was thought that this arc would occur on any bearing between the ground and the welding point. In all the years I worked in the maintenance field, I never saw that happen, not even in babbitt bearings. Good welding practice would be to attach the ground as close to the welding point as possible.

Have never in 72+ yrs seen anyone disconnect a battery on anything being welded other than to protect an alternator years ago(60's,70's). Cars, trucks, heavy equipment, or anything with a battery the last 35 yrs, No!.

Tiggerdad I disagree respectfully, I have had the pleasure of replacing bearings that some welder slapped his ground on the end of a large shaft and was welding on the draw works skid, arked the balls to the bearing race, these were very expensive bearings, needless to say the welder was skidded, your last statement is correct

All the work is done and I kept the ground next to the welding spot. Thanks
