2003 Shamrock

Hi all, We just purchased our 2003 17 ft shamrock last night. We are so excited we pick it up tonight. Can anyone tell us what we should look for in the inspection? We want to try and cover everything that might create a problem now or in the near future. Thanks

are you buying from a dealer or private party?

check every square inch around and below the bunk doors. especially the seals and hinge areas.
these are the weak spots in hybrid design, especially the front bunk.
also where the canvas attaches to the trailer and the condition of the bunk doors themselves. watch for bubbles or soft spots on them, especially on the edges.

other than that, it would be the same for any TT: roof, RV systems, windows, undercarriage, tires and so on.

If it has brakes, they would be electric.

Check the bunk doors, inside and out to make sure they are not delaminating.

Run/test every electronic, mechanical, and gas appliance including but not limited to: lights, A/C, toilet, shower, heater, fans, microwave, RVQ, stove, sump pump, radio, TV, antenna, fridge, awning, slide out, electrical outlet, GFI, etc., and then knock on every corner, wall, door, side, ceiling, and don't foget to get on the roof and inspect the sealant and other items up there.

Take you time and inspect, and make it like if you were camping right then and there.

Bettyboop, this list might be helpful if you haven't picked it up, yet.

Its very comprehensive and I'd give credit if I could recall where it came from; but not sure where I got this.

Well, if the trailer has electric brakes, you'll need a "brake controller" in the tow vehicle. I have no idea if your vehicle already has one installed. Or if it's even wired for one. I doubt very much that it came with one from the factory. But maybe one was installed at some point since it was new.

Do you have a 7-way plug near the hitch on the back of the tow vehicle? If yes, that's a good sign. However it doesn't mean you're capable of controlling electric brakes.

Here's an example of a brake controller for your vehicle: Tekonsha Brake Controller with Wiring for Toyota 4Runner 2004 - 90885-3040P

Since this kit is available for your vehicle, I assume that it has a 7-way plug and is wired correctly to control the trailer brakes once the controller is installed.

Do you have such a device mounted to the dash in your 4runner?

Get your brakes squared away first, then you can think about the 12v+ feed at the 7-way for charging the camper battery while towing. But that's probably another thread.

^^^^ agreed. You need a brake controller and you will have no brakes at all on your trailer until you do.

Your Toyota probably does not have one unless you installed one as an after-market piece.

If you have the tow package on your vehicle, you should have all the wiring in place and the Prodigy P2 or P3 will work just fine. Check RVWholesalers.com or Adventurerv.net. The P2 should cost about $99 at those places.

along with the brake controller, you'll need a WDH with sway control.

there should be a model number somewhere on the trailer or on the inside sticker.
