2020 roo 21ss

Hello all. Newbie here, we just bought a 2019 roo 21ss and pick it up next Friday. So excited to be camping again! Question is when did they start to manufacture the 2020 models? Ours was manufactured middle of Oct. 2018 and was wondering if it is an early or later model 2019? Have been reading a lot of posts here and have learned a lot about these campers, and saw some good mods. that I am planning on doing. One more question, roughly how long does the pdi take at the dealership? Just wondering how much time to allow. Thanks to all of you for a wonderful and informative forum.

Welcome! Congrats on the new trailer. We ordered ours in mid February and it came 2nd week of April and was a 2020, so sometime mid March probably. Our PDI took about 4 hours and that included a lunch break.

Best of luck!

If it was manufactured in 2018, it's definitely a 2019.
It would have to made around March, 2019 or later, to be a 2020.
A good PDI should take at least 2-3 hours, especially if you're a newbie. DO NOT allow the dealer to rush you. Too many newbies allow dealers to give them inadequate PDIs, because they are intimidated and don't know any better.

I've seen way too many newbies on RV forums, asking how things work or something is wrong, because they didn't make sure they had a complete and thorough PDI.
If the dealer balks or says they don't have the time, tell them you'll be back to accept the trailer AFTER you get the thorough PDI. DONT sign the paperwork until it has been thoroughly inspected and the warranty issues identified and documented.

Just a note from our PDI 8 years ago. Be sure & open & close everything. That means bunk doors, cupboards, drawers & windows. We bought out Roo at the RV show, but it was so crowded they didn't open the side bunk at the show & wasn't opened until we opened it at PDI. Come to find out factory had installed cables for the front bunk on the side bed. Since the cables are longer on the front to allow for the front angle the side bed was at an impossible angle hanging down. So had to get cable ordered. We also found that our windows that lift up that one on the slide was sealed shut & the tech had to work it open. We found out later in the summer that the AC vents in the ceiling wouldn't stay open & so had to have dealer order replacements for them under warranty. Take you time & check everything.

Where are you seeing it was manufactured October 2018? On the frame sticker? That could be the date the frame was made, or the frame design type. For example our 2015 FE has a sticker date of February 2015 and a "frame design date" of 2013. Basically the frame design did not change from 2013 to 2015 when mine was actually made.

As to your actual trailer, the important thing is what does the "Certificate of Origin" say the year is? This is the factory document needed for the first title to be issued and that is the official document for that individual trailer by VIN? As long as that VIN on the Certificate of Origin and the VIN on the trailer frame (stamped into the tongue) and VIN on the sticker with the trailer weights all match, the year is what the Certificate of Origin says.

Here is my frame sticker for an example. On our TT it was on the entry side near the front of the trailer. I'm also including a scan of my Certificate of Origin so you will know what they look like. The dealer sends this to the DMV for the title and tag to be issued. I obtained my copy from the State DMV.

It's also on the sticker on the left front side of the TT.

yep, this is where it says oct 12, 2018. Just wondering when they switch over and start making the 2020's. I looked in a 2020 21ss and didn't look any different than the 2019.

Mine's a 2016 and you can see it was made in early April, 2015. So early spring is when they start making the next years models.

BUT - Even though it's being called a new model year, usually they don't actually make any changes until sometime in the summer.

No one knows why.

that's why I couldn't see spending an extra 7K on a 2020 that looked just like a new 2019. Not worrying about resale value, we plan on having this for a long time. It checks all the boxes that we wanted and then some.

You will need 2-3 hours for the walk through. You will love the 21ss. It’s a very well thought out camper - so versatile. The only thing i have found lacking in ours (2018] is storage space for clothes, food and cookware. We have taken ours to a triathlon in Idaho, fly fishing in Montana, numerous local trips in CO mountains and just returned from a weeklong trip to Michigan for the Ironman triathlon and the trailer has functioned flawlessly. I did replace the stock tires with Goodyear Endurance tires and installed a TPMS (TireMinder) but no other mods. Some tips from our experiences thus far:

- I’ve found that setting up the front bed is most easily done by pulling the mattress out first rather than wrestling around it. Rear bed just leave mattress upright and climb onto the loft and install the bar and then close mb out and drop the mattress in place.
- use the ward robe closet for food and hang a collapsible soft sided shoe rack in there to create shelves or compartments for food - then you have lots of room for food.
- stackable plastic drawer bins fit right in front of the rear bed loft and provide a great way to store clothes
- jump start your fridge and freezer by putting frozen packs in there after turning it on 1 day ahead of your trip. Then remove them when you put food in. Avoid putting room temp food in the fridge until it is at cold temperature.
- always drop the table into low position when traveling or it can tip over and hit and dent the oven door.

Enjoy and safe travels to you!

7K more for a 2020? You must have gotten a heck of a deal on your 2019. You should be able to get at 2020 21ss for 22 or 22.5 K.

Not around here. Got ours for 21,500, and the 2020 the best I could get was 27,999 and had to go 4 hours away. I found a place that would do 21,200 for the 2019, but was an 8 hour drive one way.

I think I am going to put shelves in the wardrobe closet to increase our storage. Cant see wasting that space for hanging clothes. We are camping, who cares if my shirt has a few wrinkles!!

Different strokes. One of the reasons we have the 23SS is the large wardrobe where we can hang clothes. Just grab them from the closet at home and put them in the camper still on the hangers. Easy peasy. No digging thru drawers to find stuff. Drawers use up I'm guessing 25% of their cubic capacity just in the drawer and hardware. Shelves are a more efficient use of space but less convenient. As you said, it's camping.

Model year doesn't imply any changes were made nor does it mean there aren't mid-year changes during that same model year. I refer to our 23SS built in May 2005 (yep 14 years ago!) as an "early 2006" as it still has some carryovers from the 2005 model (like a pair of stools but no counter to sit at) and there were major physical changes mid year. I believe the entire coach body got 6" wider and taller sometime during the model year.

Anyway a 2019 trailer could possibly be made in April or May 2018 so it could be over a year old today. The 2020 models have been out for several months. This is the major reason I prefer to deal with high volume dealers where the trailers aren't sitting on the lot and tramped through by hundreds of potential buyers.

Jimbo, I see you are in Ohio. I'm glad you are happy with your deal.

When/if you buy your next camper, you may want to check RV Wholesalers (Lakeview OH) and Labadie RV (Holland OH). I just checked both of their websites and as a point of comparison:
RVW 2020 21SS @ $21,525 (if you finance with them)
Labidie 2020 21SS 2ea. @ $22,499
I got quotes from both of them back in 2016 when I bought my 23IKSS and found that they will negotiate a little lower that what they show online, but not much.
I actually ended up buying a Shamrock (sister to Roo) 23IKSS from Keystone RV center in Greencastle PA. At that time they beat the best prices from Labadie, RVW and RV One.

Shamrock, I actually did look at Labadie RV. They had the 2019 21ss for 22,500 and would not budge on the price. Last week they did not have any 2020 rockwood roo 21ss listed on their site. I actually told the rv dealer where I got mine that I was also dealing with Labadie rv and whoever gave me the better deal is where I was going. That's when he said his price and I took it, eventhough I already knew Labadie was not budging on their price. Plus don't have to drive 4 hours to get it. I think buying an RV is worse than buying a car!!
