21dk question

I have to say to you 21dk owners, that's one mighty fine camper! I love the tub, the direct route to the bathroom from outside, and the tiny fridge for outside. We've ordered the 23ikss and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. I am second guessing our choice and wondering if we shouldn't have bought the 21dk. Everything is so practical in that one!!

172" is the length from the center between both axles to the center of the coupler. The weight of this trailer empty is 4010. I did not put this on a scale. This is on our 21dk 2014 with thermopane windows, tank heaters, slide topper, aluminum wheels and all other options possible except stainless appliances.

I love my 21dk. Love the tub! Love the cherrywood cabinets. Mine weighs in at 3988. I'm trying to keep it lightweight. Towing with a Tahoe.

I just got the generic solar blankets and put them on one end. I'm going to put the industrial velcro strip across the top of the tent end and may just leave it on permenatly. Anyone else do that?

Thanks for the helpful details. That puts the trailer wheelbase at 66" shorter than 2x the 119" wheelbase of my Durango, so I should be fine towing it.

Someone replied to my similar request for information on the hybridexplorer forum about a Jayco 19H. His statement that I'd "... run out of room in the camper just trying to hit the loading limit ..." summarizes statements by others.

We've pretty much decided to get a Roo. The unanswered question is whether it will be a 19 or a 21DK. We have yet to see the latter on a lot so we can't determine if the larger windows of the 19 outweigh the extra space of the 21DK. There are only 2 of us so space won't be at a premium and we don't need the extra bed provided by the U-dinette.

The ducted AC in the 21DK seems like it would be a plus. I'll have to compare outdoor accessible storage, between the two.

We chose the 21dk over the 19 for the size, options, and the slide. We tow with a 2010 xterra with a 4pt eq hitch. Tows great, brakes great, ... just a smidge underpowered up hills but worth having the smaller suv.

Not totally thrilled with the storage on my Roo 19. There is actually a small "pass through" across the front of the camper, but the curbside storage door is about 2 feet behind it, so you can't "pass through." It means there's room in front of the camper you can't get to very well. Another guy installed a door below the bed between the dinette and the sofa to get access. I'm thinking about it.

That sounds like my observations about the rear storage, where the outside door is on the back wall of the trailer about 2 feet in from the street side. It would make more sense for there to be an end door (end of the storage space, that is) on the street side and relocate the existing rear door closer to the curb side.

You're right. On my rear space, it too could be a pass through, except that they've installed a piece of paneling across each end about a foot from the side wall. It's supposed to protect the tail light wiring, but it's a huge waste of space. I will probably pull out the paneling, but not sure how I'll protect the wiring yet. I'm still cogitating on that one.

On my old pop-up I created a protective box around the water pump with a 1x2 frame covered with hardware cloth. Perhaps a similar approach world work to protect the tail light wiring?

Its nothing more than a 'dorm' fridge. AC only.

Thanks. That's what it looked like. I value the outside-accessible storage more than the refrigerator. My son leaves for college in August. If I buy a 21DK, I foresee that refrigerator going with him to his dorm, and I get a big empty storage box situated squarely over the axle.

Unfortunately, 21DKs seem hard to come by in the South.

I just saw a picture of a weight label sent to me by a dealer. The GVWR is 4965 while the GAWR is 2200 per axle. That means that at max weight the manufacturer assumes at least 565# are on the hitch. I guess that's why they list that as the hitch weight, on their web site.

The dry weight as built is 3957 with a cargo capacity of 970. Subtract 250 for a full load of water and I have 720 left. Do other 21DK owners find that adequate without exceeding the trailer GVWR?

Chris ,, that weight is just for when you are towing it, as far as what is inside it. But after you put down the stablizer jacks, it can handle more.
I personally can't imagine putting 700 lbs of stuff in the 21dk.
I am kinda figuring in my head but this is what I figure:
Bedding: 10 lbs
Towels: 10 lbs
Bathroom accessories, shampoo etc. 10 lbs
Kitchen plates/cookware/silverware etc.. 30 lbs
Food in the pantry (Booze included):-0 50 lbs
Refrigerator , packed with bottled water 50 lbs
Clothing 20 lbs
Outside storage : sewer hose , water hose , levelers, 30 lbs

So around 200 lbs. That is without any water in the tanks. We just carry a small amount in the tank when traveling. Most every place you camp will have water unless you are boondocking.
