23WS - How do you level your beds?

I am surprised I have not seen this complaint before so I hope it's not just our camper!

The bed platform, when folded down is not on the same plane as the permanent 'shelf' that makes up the rest of the bed. The folding platform sits quite a bit lower when folded out so that the smaller portion of the folding mattress is raised compared to the rest of the bed. The difference is fairly dramatic, plus there is a good sized ridge there as well!

We have been putting shims under the bed at that point to try to equalize it because otherwise, it reduces the overall size of the bed (can't sleep towards that edge because it is such a big transition - uncomfortable and it rolls you back to the middle of the bed!). We put a 4" memory foam topper on the mattress and that helps but we still have to shim it.

Anyone else notice this or have suggestions for a fix?? Has to be the worst design ever!

I'll be closing it up for the winter this weekend so I'll see if I can take some pics.

Thanks

Pictures would be helpful but we don't have any issue with our 23ws beds. The mattress lays fairly level when deployed.

Our 24WS has a slight dip, but it’s going in this week to have the bed hinge strengthened because it’s pulling a bit at the rivets. It’s nithing dramatic but will get worse with time.

I’d say yours needs to be looked at.

There should be a folded part for the shelf that’s thinner than the rest of the mattress to make up for the dip?

a couple of years ago someone posted a similar complaint as I recall... others posted and it seemed that some hybrids had bigger ledge problems then others. My 3 bunks are relatively flat with the ledge and bunk within half an inch of each other. I guess I got lucky...

Not being sarcastic! After we level our RV the beds haven’t been an issue! When leveling we have to allow for the full slide weight before it is opened!

This thread is in the Hybrid section of the Forum and the OP has a hybrid TT. Hybrid beds are on drop down bunk doors, which is what the OP is asking about, NOT the level of the RV.
So sarcasm is excused.[emoji6]

IMO, its a problem with the installation of the bed door at the factory. Our Roo had a similar problem. We used a 3” thick foam topper on the mattress. It wasn’t perfect but it was comfortable enough for my DW to sleep on that side.

Apart from a complete rebuild of the rear of the trailer the fix is to determine the difference and put a pad that thickness on the bed door. Have no idea the cost of closed foam in sheets though but this would be my first attempt. Commonly sold as sound insulation.

Chuck,
that's not a bad idea! I was thinking about thin plywood or something like that but was afraid of the added weight.
I still owe you guys pics but I got busy and haven't made it to the camper to winterize it, yet. Hopefully, this weekend will be better.

Well, there is the best solution. Just have the DW sleep on that part.

We have no issues with our Roo 21SS, the beds are both level. I may not understand the problem. Is the bed door slanted downward when open or is the door part of the bed mounted lower than the shelf? If the former I would thing the support wires could be shortened.

The impression I get is that the bed deck is like and inch or more lower than the ledge that is the part of the trailer right next to the bed. So, when the mattress is placed on it, it causes the mattress to have a slight slant toward the outside of the trailer.

Luckily we don't have this problem. I would probably have to take it back to the dealer and demand a fix on this one unless it would cause major structural/leakage issues to re-seat the bunk properly.

Yup, same sides as we sleep at home. The foam topper made it quite tolerable for her. The only negative was I had to crawl over her to get out of bed if she wasn't up before me. When we moved to the TT both problems solved themselves. Still need that 3" topper for the poor RV mattress though.

Sorry to revive an old-ish thread, just curious what the final outcome was with trying closed-cell foam or some other trick? Our 2013 21SS has this issue as well, makes it very difficult for my wife or I to sleep because whoever is sleeping on the inside can't lay level, which is uncomfortable, and ultimately ends up rolling off the ledge towards the outside and crowding the other. My wife and I switched which side we sleep on because she was complaining about the ledge and now I get it. It was bad enough that I wouldn't blame her for not wanting to sleep on that side anymore because I sure don't!

I haven't pulled out my carpenter's square to measure the height difference yet but I definitely need to get this fixed before we go out camping again. I like the closed-cell foam/insulation idea and attaching it with velcro or double-sided tape.

If anyone has done this then please speak up and let us know how well it worked.

Thanks!

Clearly, I did something wrong. Oddly, I can see the links when I go into edit mode but they disappear when I click 'save.' I'll keep working on this. Sorry!

Maybe this doesn't work with Dropbox?
