Great space...if the look bothers your.. ( which I think it is fine).. you could cover the bottom/sides with adhesive shelf liner.. give it a little POP..
And I think it is a great place for bread.. chips.. any crushables..

Shelf paper... That's what DH said HaHa! Not gone wrestle with sticky paper on vertical surfaces and the 'ceiling'.
It's fine. It's camping. It's a place to put stuff.
I love people's wine racks, but that's just not for us. Booze will probably go up there out of reach of kids at some point!

Did you have trouble getting the wood panel out?

For all those contemplating this mod, make sure you don't mess up the venting of the refrigerator by blocking off the path to the roof or outside vent.

Summer: we went slowly and carefully, but it wasn't super easy. It was held in with staples (from the inside), some caulk and the foam insulation in the top corners was also 'holding' the panel on.
Old coot: we left the insulation in there, just moved it back a bit. There was already dead space in front of the insulation. The vent for the fridge is back there, but we aren't bothering it.
