AC freezing up-Normal? or Issue.

Couple times in our 2015 Roo 19 we've had the AC freeze up on us. The fan seems to run at about 60% and it's luke warm air. I've flipped it over to fan high, and a few minutes later water/condensation pours down the gutters like a river. I'm wondering if this is normal and expected, or I should run it in for a warranty repair.
Couple of factors that make me wonder if this is "to be expected":
We've been camping with outside temps in the 90-100 range with high humidity (Missouri, Arkansas, with Colorado being the lowest humidity ranges).
We've had 3 events recently where the AC froze up. Once through the night, and twice when we left the unit running on low during the day.
What's your experience? Lots of info on this condition, just wondering about the hybrid/Roo/Shamrocks specifically.

Have you had your fan on high?

Sounds like you might be low on refrigerant. I'd have it checked.

Well, so far we have camped once in 100 degree very humid conditions, we did not have this problem.... but we were in shade and I do have the gizmos on the tent ends. The AC cycled on and off and kept the camper at a reasonable temperature. When the AC ran, there was a steady stream of condensate coming off the roof. Will see how it handles at the beach in a couple of weeks......

Condensate off the roof is fine, normal. Freezing up though, is not.😉

Run on high fan until the temp and humidity are reduced, then you should be able to run on auto. Check the filter and clean if necessary. If the AC is mechanically OK it can freeze up in very humid conditions if there is not enough air flow to keep the condensate above freezing on the coils.

I have a 2015 Shamrock 19, and you need to run the AC on High Cool all the time or the unit will freeze up, especially if there is a lot of outside humidity. I do not know the exact reason this occurs but I thought mine was broken and took it back for service and they told me this is recommended by manufacturer when humidity is greater than 45%. I live in NC and run it on high whenever we camp (seriously humid) and have not had a problem since. Just adjust the temp gauge to suit your needs. I was out last week and it was 98 with a heat index of 105, and was very comfortable. Hope this helps.

I know you asked specifically about experiences from hybrid/Roo owners but I will tell you.. ANY R/V air conditioning is susceptible to freezing up in high humidity conditions running the fan on low only. The more air flow the better for keeping it from freezing.

With the fan on low and high humidity, you may not be moving enough air across the coils to defrost. When I had one AC in my precious 5er, it could not keep up in 95 degrees and high humidity and would freeze up. When I added the second AC it gave each unit a break in order to defrost. I'm guessing your unit is just being overworked in the high temps and humidity.

Along with the suggestions above, remove the grill and check to see if the freeze coil (looks like a stack of quarters with wires) is attached to the bottom of the evaporator coils.

wow some mis info posted . if your freezing up check the location of your freeze sensor . it has eiither fallen out or is not positioned in the correct location . should be low on the coils and pushed in enough to touch the coil . if it's the puck style then it needs to be clipped to the coils on the end of evaporator . low Freon will not cause freeze up and no way to add refrigerant . no need to run fan on high . again look at freeze sensor and or very dirty coils blocking air flow or both .

Keep the fan on high.

The lack of airflow across the evaporator is more than likely the problem.

Bama Rambler and Northstar are spot on. I know because this happened to us in 2013. Turbs advised we check the freezer coil & Yup! there it was dangling by the wire.

Pull the Interior cover off a see if a white wire coming from above is attached to the ACCOUNT fins. This wire acts as a thermostat and doesn't allow the unit to freeze. If not you will have to have installed.

Air flow will DEFINITELY cause it to freeze up!
When I had one a/c I would close vents off to get more air in the bedroom and then my a/c would freeze up.
If I left all those vents open it would not freeze.

I fixed that by adding a second a/c

Sounds good everyone and thanks! I'll take some time and look into the freeze sensor, if it's not simple and obvious I'll run it up to the dealer for a warranted repair.

Run fan on high during hot, humid weather. At night turn fan to auto. This will keep air flowing over the coils and help prevent them from icing up. Once they ice up, your A/C will not cool. You can't add Freon to an RV A/C the only solution is to replace the A/C unit.

before you go and replace an AC for icing up it would be best to address why it's icing up #1 reason freezer sensor fell out of place or was installed incorrectly in the first place or and not likely the freeze sensor is bad #2 reason is blockage of air flow , dirty coils full of dust . #3 reason is the area between supply and return is allowing the cold air to go right back into the return side . That's pretty much it as to why you have freeze ups . the freeze sensor will shut the compressor down when it senses freezing which is why you want it low on the coils and as close to and touching a coil between the fins . the fan will still run and the sensor will turn on and off the compressor as needed .

Aquaman is right on the money. Check the filter, intake area and outlets, any restriction will slow the humid air down and the moisture will freeze on the coils. Running on Fan/Air there is enough time to defrost the coils, this is just away around freeze ups.

When you have the filter and grate off look to see if the return air divider hasn't came loose allowing cold air to mix with warm return air.
