Added Shelves to Cabinet Over Sink & Coat Cabinet

So the cabinet over the sink in my Roo 183L was a really deep cabinet and that also seemed to be the best place to keep utensils. So we decided to add some shelves in so that it could be much better organized, hold more stuff and also still have the utensils on the bottom. Got metal shelf brackets and clips from Home Depot and purchased some cabinet grade wood with stain to match the existing cabinets and made up some shelves.

The coat closet was also sort of worthless, so we added 2 shelves in there also for additional storage. This one was a little tricky since the cabinet has a weird angle in it (it's not rectangular). Turned out pretty sweet!

Check out the before and after pictures.

Nice. Looks like it came that way from the factory.

Overall, the Roo designs seem very well thought out, but I can't figure out what they have against drawers?? Even our popup had a couple drawers for silverware and utensils.

Our 2013 IKSS has three kitchen drawers, which seemed normal when we looked at it. Then I started seeing all these posts about adding drawers or where to store silverware in a lot of Roo models. Now, I see on the 2014 IKSS they took out the drawers for a bigger cabinet??? The pullout sleves they added are nice, but I would much rather have the drawers. Glad we got the 2013 model.

Great job!! I have to do those EXACT mods for next year. Can I ask what stain you used and did you like the color? Did it match OK? That's half my hesitation....finding a color that matches well!
Thanks!

Wow! Between your drawer mods and shelving you've been busy! They look great, nice job on all of them.

Eric,

I think the stain is a 95% match. It may be have a little too much sheen to it and be a little brown compared to the cherry cabinets. That is coming from a perfectionist, and only I would say that - everyone else who has seen it said they thought the shelves were OEM. I took a door off a cabinet into Home Depot to match it up.

I'd also recommend that you get the veneer strips to put on the front edge of the plywood shelves so it adds a wood grain look vs the layered plywood look. I did that and it makes them look OEM also.

Here are the two pictures of the stain and the wood veneer strips.
