Andersen Hitch Install Issue

Ok so installed the new hitch everything seemed ok until I backed in to my driveway I heard a bang, when I got out and looked both brackets tilted forward, I tightened them down to 90PSI but seems like they wouldn't stay? Anyone have any ideas, I plan on calling Jason from Anderson to see why

Brackets should be tilted forward from the bottom as seen in this picture. The set screw needs to be drilled into the frame to stay as tightening it alone will allow the brackets to slip. Had this problem when I first hooked up the andersen hitch a couple years ago. Compress the red polyurethane bushing down to about 2 1/2" or wherever to pull your tow vehicle front axle back down and raise the rear axle. Hitch is fantastic once set up right.

Yea can't remember the size hole but it's in the instructions that came with the hitch. I think it's 3/8". Great hitch!

Thought the manual said to tighten those bolts to 150? But even with that, mine would "walk" forward add cause a headache. Lots of sway with brackets at different distances. Welded some stopper brackets on both sides and I am MUCH happier now. Click image for larger version

That will hold them in place too. Doesn't matter how tight you bolt them they will still walk forward if you don't drill through the frame for the setscrew or weld it in place as hondaman did. Too much tension and stress on the chains.

Spoke to Jason from Anderson reset brackets to 27"&29" according to manual, torqued the bolts to 90psi and redid everything, much better now. First photo is old setup second is new setup.

Nice job looks good. You may also want to put your safety chains over the top of the triangular plate as there is a thread from a few weeks ago with someone ripping them off the shackle on a really sharp turn because of them binding on the plate since it does not turn with the vehicle.

do all the Andersen hitches require all this work?
i thought they were supposed to be simple and not require welding brackets on the A-frame.

They are pretty obviously simple. Two inch welds are included as an optional installation method (which I did) because the brackets can walk forward over time. Hondaman did his own thing and it seems to be working for him.

Do all Progress MFG hitches weight 150lbs? Do they all make huge amounts of noise? Do they all require a lot of dialing in? . . .

Takes a couple times to get it set up right but once done it's a simple setup, grease free, noise free, does not require removal for reversing and super light weight.

I will have to say first real trip out yesterday it was so nice, no noise, grinding or popping sounds, anti-away worked perfect and so much lighter to store the ball assembly and angle plate. I just need to replace the stock F150 shocks with Rancho's or something else that is not as soft as 2014 Ford Factory suspension. Anderson hitch worked as planned and Jason from Anderson was very helpful.

My guess is the higher the tongue weight, the more probable that you may have to weld into place. I'm running close to 1000 in tongue and have also read that others with lower weight have not had much "walking" problem.

I marked my brackets when I installed them to see if they would walk. Set the setscrews w/o drilling into the frame and they haven't budged one bit. I do plan on welding them on when my buddy has some time, but no significant issues so far. I was the one that had the safety chain break the shackle on the plate. I just added a few more links as my chains looked short anyways and didn't have any problems last weekend on my trip. Love my Andersen.

Edit: My TW is about 700lbs when I travel.

To keep the brackets from walking forward on mine, I installed the brackets loosely and then drilled a 6mm hole right in front of the top cross bolt. Then, installed a bolt, nut and a couple washers into the hole (I have a C-frame, so it was easy). Slid the brackets forward so the top bracket bolt was against the bolt head I installed and tightened everything up.

Ok good. You should be fine. Drilling into the frame for the setscrew accomplishes the same goal as welding if you don't want to weld it on. It is a fantastic wdh for all of its benefits. I have an equal-i-zer hitch on another dual axle work trailer which works well but I prefer this Andersen hitch.

Do you have a Roo? I have a 2015 23ikss but it seems the 27" they recommend is too close, I have to move them back or I get too many threads coming out the back by the red bushing

I believe the 27" is their recommend minimum. If you have the room, move the brackets back. You can even add a link if you have too.

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but do you have the current springs and washers? They are shorter than the originals and will make you move the bracket back or cut a link off.

I do not have the most current bushings. Thought about having them send be a set but I would have to move the brackets even closer-under the 27" suggested. My setup is at 25.5 now. 27" would have been in the middle of my batteries.
