Anyone have to replace slide motor/gear?

I think that my slide motor or gear is starting to act up & think I may have to replace it. Has anyone had to do this with a non Swintek slide on their Roo year 2009-2012?

I'm in the same boat as you. I think the gears have stripped, as it started making a high pitched noise on me this last trip (not the ratcheting sound when it reaches the end of travel) and would not move at all. Had to crank it in and out manually for the rest of the trip. I'm currently researching replacement parts and instructions, so I'll let you know if/when I figure it all out. Please do the same for me!

Any relation to the Castle Family music group that used to tour in the Midwest in the 80's?

Mine has been flakey that past several years. When we go to pull the slide in it just rachets and I have to give the slide a little push from outside and then it works OK. After 8 years of ownership I decided I would like a slide topper over the slide out to keep it clean. Installed it myself, which went OK, but when we go to run the slide out it rachets several times while going out. Give it a little push from inside & it goes out. When the Roo was several years old had a granddaughter press the switch while it was out and it rachetted a number of times before we stopped her. Stupid buttons at a kids level! Put some lock out covers over the slide & awning switches after that. I called Forest River parts & they couldn't tell me anything about the part and said they would ask around & call me back. Been several days & no response. Looking on line it is an expensive part, somewhere between $500 & $1000.

There are aftermarket gear motors for some brands/types for way less.

Here is one...

Slide out problems

I had an issue with the Lippert slide out motor and had the drive gear strip--nylon one. I found one on Ebay that worked. If I ordered from Lippert, I had to get 5 ea. Was not a problem removing the installing new gear.

I don't think I have any relatives in the midwest, but now I'm curious - I'll have to look into it!

Mine has been like this since I purchased it used in 2013 - it always has needed a push to get it to start coming in, otherwise it would just make the ratcheting sound.. Just got used to it and have been using it this way for years!

I think this is now my problem - you were able to dismantle the gearbox and replace the stripped gear? Did you use another nylon one, or switch to metal?

Slipping slideout gear

The new gear was a modified one with a sliding clutch washer to keep the teeth from stripping. It worked a lot better than the old one.

Finally got a chance to remove the motor and gearbox. The plastic gear has a flat spot where some of the teeth stripped.

I'd love to be able to replace this gear, but have no idea where to find it. Pjoz, if this is the one you found on eBay, can you share a link? Thanks so much in advance for your help!

OK, so stumbled upon this on Ebay:

https://ebay.us/7TEtLN

The measurements and teeth counts line up. It seems to be all nylon, whereas the original is half metal, half nylon. Also a bit pricey at $35, but if it fixes it, I guess it's worth it, vs replacing the whole assembly at $150. Thoughts?

That was the one I replaced. The new one was different in that it had a slip tension washer.

Since this was brought up again & since I started this thread, guess I ought to explain what I did to fix the problem. I removed my motor and opened up the gear box. Everything looked good inside, so I put it back together. It was almost as if the motor didn't have enough to do the job. I found a motor & gear box on line from Recpro for about $150. 18.1 ratio motor with the same dimensions as the original. I decided to go with that. Installed it and notice a great improvement in how the slide works. Think the old one was just wearing out. I replaced that last spring, but haven't had much chance to use it due to DW health problems. She is doing better now, so hope to get a lot more use this year.
