Anyone Replace the Bed Locks?

While we're waiting for our 23IKSS to arrive, I was wondering if the bed locks (not the storage locks) are the standard CH751-type or whether they use more secure keys?

Has anyone tried to change them for the more secure tubular cam-lock type?

TIA,

In my previous 2016 23IKSS had the same key for all doors but the entry dor, including the bed doors.
I never changed them.

It's a camper... lots of entry points including an easily broke window... don't worry about it... it is not a fortress... a hammer and a stout screwdriver gets you past any lock

I owned a convertible for a lot of years... why lock the doors when a simple pocket knife gets you inside?

I replaced all of mine with locks that match the door. One key fits all. I really like this convenience. Sure campers aren't fortresses but I prefer not to have my locks match the locks of 98% of all the other campers out there. This is mostly for when it is on the storage lot.

I still have my CH751 key and look at all the RV's on the storage lot knowing that I could get into most of their storage compartments and more.

My bed doors used a different key from the entry door and the storage doors.

Changing Locks

The famous, 751 Key fits all factory installed locks... I changed mine after learning this. Got locks online.. not expensive.. all keyed alike..

Yeah, I guess that's my concern as well. We've been renting RVs for about a year and haven't really felt unsafe at all. However, when it comes to parking when we're traveling on the road, I'd rather be safe than sorry and change out the CH751s. Good to hear that the bunk doors were keyed to something other.

Thank you, all!

I wouldn’t bother changing the locks unless you want to for convenience. If a thief wants what’s in your trailer they will damage it to get in and you’ll have a more serious problem to deal with.

If you ever stop somewhere and it doesn’t feel safe, move on and find another place. You’re supposed to be relaxing, not worrying about thieves or worse.

TIA,
Nothing secure about those cylindrical locks. Pick up a BIC ballpoint pen--the cheap stick kind. Remove the plug at the back end--teeth will do it if nothing else is handy. Force that end into the lock. It will take some force but not extreme. Twist the pen shaft and the lock will open--the soft plastic conforms to the needed shape. Here's a video.

I've done this many times--even coached friends through it over the phone.

Agreed, those are one of the worst designed locks ever made. I used to own a couple laundromats and any laundromat owner that still used those types of locks on their machines got their money stolen.

The only thing a lock does is keep a honest man honest. In other words ,if someone wants to get in , they will..

Love the conundrum here... key alike? different locks, stronger locks on the hybrid bunk doors?

give me a hammer and a stout screwdriver and all the BUNK doors will be open in a matter of a minute or two, after all the locks are only surrounded by PLASTIC...

NOW MIND YOU the OP asked about BUNK DOOR locks, not all cargo locks, although those are easily defeated also.

Good (and realistic) counsel given here! Thank you!

Obviously, the very nature of a TT (and especially a hybrid) does not lend itself to "vault-like" security. If someone is bound and determine to gain entry, they will (can you say: "reciprocating saw"?); however, that isn't my intention.

I think every one of you has a key to my cargo compartments. I'd like to change that situation. I'm assuming all Roo owners have a key to my bunks as well. I'd like to change that also.

If you're a mischief-maker at a rest stop with a couple of idle minutes and a CH751/bunk key, I'd like to take a reasonable level of precaution to dissuade you from mucking with my trailer. However, as some have rightly pointed out, the determined thief will not be deterred. I guess we all accept that reality as RV owners!

When we are in the campground, I feel part of the community and do not worry about security like I do on the road.

Again, many thanks to all!

Look up Global Link RV locks and there are several places that sell them. Look at the number on your door key and select locks that have a matching number. That way they will all be keyed the same as your door.

Don't forget your outside shower like I did.

As for all the security naysayers, if I can have one key that operates everything while getting rid of the CH751 key then that is perfect. Yeah, someone can get into my house very easily by throwing a rock through a window, still doesn't mean I want my house locks keyed the same as everyone else in my neighborhood. When we are camping, security is the least of my worries. My camper spends more time without us in storage, or overnight parked in front of our house, or in a Wal Mart etc. parking lot while we are travelling. You aren't going to make anything perfectly secure. The idea is to make it just a little bit more difficult than it is worth messing with, or even better yet, make it just a little bit more difficult that the one sitting next to you.

I don't have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.

Most thieves are lazy. That's why they are thieves rather than employees. As a former Police Officer, I will agree that anyone can break into a camper, but if yours is more difficult than the next one...they will skip yours.
