Awning & Wind

1st year with a 2018 233s; upgraded from a 276HW pop up. My 276HW awning would handle a lot of wind if I anchored it down. My question is how much wind can a 233s awning handle; MPH? The location I am camping at this weekend is expecting inches of rain with 15 MPH winds. What will me awning safely handle?

Won't handle much wind without awning poles and tie downs. BTW, I sell pole attaching hardware. PM me for prices and what is included in the kits.

I will never know because when in doubt I bring it in. Not risking an expensive power awning on a gamble. Only takes a few seconds to hold the button down.

When in doubt, heavy wind, rain I always retract the awning. I put it in when I leave for any length of time. I have seen some awnings get damaged because the owner went some where without retracting the awning. Its better than disrupting your camping trip with damage and expense that could have been avoided. Maybe I am over cautious.

Bottom line...

They can't handle much wind or rain.

Better off to put it out when you are going to use it and leave it rolled up when not in use.

With OldCoot's brackets and poles they can stand a reasonable amount of wind without not so much.

Our salesman said if you can see the trim piece that hangs down moving, bring it in, I don't think he liked awnings lol.

I have the complete kit and mine has been in wind of 30mph and lots of rain. No issues. I do put up even with awning kit when I leave the cg. Later RJD

Unfortunately, OldCoot no longer sells the awning poles. You have to rig some up, DIY.......

On a recent trip and 11 days at CG. There were 3 storms and a dumpster full of awning parts and destroyed canopy's. One of the awnings across from us had poles and two ratchet straps on each corner with screw in anchors. It is now residing in a landfill somewhere in town. Too expensive to take a chance on.

I have had previous bad experiences with awnings, wind and rain when I had a 20’ manual awning and forgetting to tilt it before a storm, but since owning a Windjammer with electric awnings, I have had no problems and I leave them deployed during all storms, and where we seasonal at, we get frequent severe storms. I can’t recall which model Dometic awnings they are (they have the metal protector for when they are rolled up), but they have very sturdy supports. If I know a storm is coming, I will tilt one end on each awning, but the times when I haven’t done that and a storm came through, the awnings were quite efficient at dumping any excessive amounts of water like they are supposed to do.

At our seasonal campground, the only people I ever see retracting awnings are the weekenders/transients. I suppose this may be because the campground is densely wooded and, so, protects us from the winds, but we still get the heavy rain which doesn’t seem to bother any of the awnings left deployed. The weekenders/transients must be in the habit of bringing them in as they frequent more campgrounds with varying degrees of protection from the wind. I always retract the awnings when I head home, but a good number of the seasonals leave their awnings deployed all season long with no issues. I have never seen an awning in a dumpster or heard of somebody losing an awning at the campground.

If I was at a different campground without the shelter of dense woods, I would probably be more considerate of how I dealt with my awnings.

Improper anchor to be using with awning hold down kit. The claw is the best method to anchor and use on holding awning down. Use good judment as to when one needs to retract awning due to siverity of storms. Later RJD

Improper anchor ?? Those are what come with most of the awning tie down kits.

It doesn't matter what type of anchor you use, they all have their limits and the limit varies with the type of soil you're anchoring into. The Claw may be a better anchor but a pair costs about 4X as much as a set of those screw in anchors.

I use poles all the time, I started with the screw in dog type. they did pull out in rain and loose soil. I went and bought the claws, They get stronger the more they are pulled on. Your awning and poles will do you no good if you can't keep them anchored down. I think a pair of claws are cheaper then a new awning last time I checked....
