Awnings at night

Spending night in camper, possible storms: do you fully retract awning?

Whenever there is a chance for strong wind we retract the awning. No need to risk damaging it.

Yes!
Unleess you want to be picking pieces of your awning off your roof, ANYTIME the wind is going to pick up, retract them before you turn in for the night.

Depends on what weather is going to do. Lots of wind put it up. To be safe put up at night and any time you leave camper during day. Later RJd

We never leave our awning out, while we're asleep.
We almost always bring it in, after sunset.
And never leave it out, if there's possible storms, during daytime.

I leave mine out but I dress it down tight and tilt it. I always check the weather on my CCrane Solar Observer (NOAA) before hand. If it's going to be windy, it gets stowed. Gentle rain, leave it out.

X2, My awning only goes out while I am sitting under it. Not worth the repairs.

We leave ours out because the quads and or adv bikes are parked under it at night. No one likes a wet seat in the AM.

We leave it out ONLY if the weather forecast says low winds. We stored it last night because of the risk of storms.
It probably won't be out today for the same reason.

We witnessed someone who left their awning out during some strong winds and the next day it was wrapped completely OVER the top of their camper. They had to get up on top with scissors and cut it off. So - yep, we always close ours anytime the wind picks up and anytime we're gone or sleeping.

You need to talk to my Bro-in-law. Brand new 5th wheel several years ago and wind took his extended awning and turned it into a pretzel on top the unit. Not a pretty sight!

If you do leave your awning extended during a rain be sure to tilt it so water runs off to one side. Otherwise you risk having a lake form in the awning which can stretch the fabric or potentially cause damage.

If it will be windy then as others have said, bring it in.

We leave ours out unless storms are predicted.

I can leave mine out when using the Awning poles and not worry unless wind will get to 40mph then bring in. I use the claws to tie them down see pic. Later RJD

Out the entire time. But that is tied down with poles, ratchet straps and deflappers.

Did the same with prior manual awnings in carport position.

I have yet to lose one but have seen many get trashed while not secured. I also pulled the the snap trim and secured the awning rail much better than Rockwood did, with longer and more screws. If by chance a fluke storm happens I think the most I will ever lose will be the fabric, but with deflappers I am not worried much. Actually we had a storm last October where the ranger station 1/4 mile away which was on top of a hill recorded some 60 to 70 mph gusts. We were down in a small valley so may not have received the full effect of those, but the awning survived fine.

We do too much under the awning, as we are outside 90% of the time with a 3 burner Camp Chef and essentially and outside kitchen set up. I am not packing that stuff up every day or when a storm comes through.

Always out with poles, tilted, ratchet straps and Claw anchors. In the 5 yrs we've had poles, it's never been in except to travel and when we're at home.

In the southwest the windy season is about 6 months out of the year and 30-40mph is avg and 50+ on a bad day. We tried all types of tie downs and poles and while largely successful, it's a PITA, and very unnerving to listen to while wondering if I should of brought it in earlier.

Many are very proud that they leave their awning out all the time, kudos to them. I just take a different approach that works for us

Now with the electric awning, that button is easy to push. Our awning is only out to keep the sun off in the mornings and when we need shade while outside. Easy.

I leave mine out at night, but have it secured with hold down poles and stops and tilted to run water off. I also leave my slides out at night with slide toppers
