Backup Shore Power Cord?

Does anyone ever carry a backup shore power cord when going camping?
I am thinking about doing this in the event that the main cord gets damaged, forgotten, stolen etc... I try to build redundancy into certain things if it makes sense and reasonable. This Camco one is reasonable. Are these fairly universal in regards to fit? http://www.amazon.com/Camco-55501-Po...P0T36P6ZNF6GP3

I carry a backup fresh water hose, washers and some fittings just in case.

Thanks,
Kip

I don't think I could justify the bulk. I always carry adapters down to 15amp and a 50' extension cord. In a worst case scenario, I'd just step down to that and buy a new cord to get by.

Normally yes. Are you running 50amp or 30amp? We have camped at RV parks where the elect post is five feet above the ground and 30 feet away from my RV. (Belleview IA) Yes we got right next to the Mississippi river and the fishing was fantastic!!

In the many years I've owned a fifth wheel I've never had a power cord damaged. While I've never had a need for a backup power cord, I do carry and have used on many occasions an extension cord. When I had a 30 amp trailer I carried a 25 foot 30 amp extension cord. Now that I have a 50 amp trailer I carry a 15 foot extension cord.

I do carry replacement ends just in case one gets damaged. This would be a quick fix until I get where I can get a new cord. The replacement ends are not water proof or repellant but they would suffice until you can get new cord & then your camping trip would not be cut short.

Extension

I always carry a 30 amp extension cord for the camper. I've been in too many camps where I had to move far away from the riser to get my slideouts extended. It's a good investment!

Why carry a second shore cord if you can still use battery power if this extremely rare thing happened?

My previous TT was 30 amps and I had a 30amp extension cord.......I kept this when we got our 50amp 5er.....Now I only have to use my 50 to 30 amp plug adapter if I cannot reach the main box A 50amp extn cable is too expensive and bulky in my case....If I had to buy an extn cord maybe I might consider a 50amp....At home I use a 50amp to 30amp short pig tail + a 30 to 15 amp adapter and a short extn cord to my outside wall power sourcel....also I normally lay out my pwr cord before I unhitch just to make sure I am not too far away...a few "inches" makes a difference in stress levels

Two words: air conditioning.

I carry a extra 50 amp cord for the few times that the power pole is to far away from the rv alone with 20 and 30amp adapters.

True but have you ever heard of someone's shore cord being stolen at a campground.

For my 30 amp tt, I carry a 30 amp extension which I have used a few times. A 50 to 30 amp splitter, which has saved me in getting off the road for one night and only 50 amp sites were available, still paid 30 amp rate. 30-15 amp helps to get refrig up and running for packing. Used it once to keep refrig going while visiting relatives off garage outlet.

The only camping we have done is in Provincial Parks where only 30 amp is available. Is it advisable to have a 30/50 amp splitter if travelling?

I agree w/Oakman. No need to carry a spare power cord. I do carry an extension cord and multiple hose for though oddly located utility pole.

Never needed a cord due to damage. Often needed an extension. We got ours at CW when they went on sale (50ft). Many state parks don't warn you when the post is far from the site - have needed on MANY trips!

Back Up Cord

We tend to camp in provincial Parks and I now have 3 25 foot extension cords as yes, they can actually put the outlet that far away. And should that fail, I have another 50 feet of 15 amp cord.

The only power cord issues I've ever heard about was related to people forgetting to disconnect from the pedestal before pulling away causing damage to the pole, the cord, and maybe even the camper.

I do agree- it's not worth carrying an extra cord. Like I mentioned- you can usually get by for as long as needed with just a high-quality 15amp cord and adapters. I carry them (cord and adapters) for other reasons, but they could pull double-doody.

Maris, I camp at a couple of parks where only 50 amp is available. On trip out west lost a couple of hours due to head winds, had to cut speed a bit. Time I got to a place to camp, they only had 50 amp sites left. They had the 50 amp splliter but a very inflated price. Picked mine up at Wally World at a much better price. View the splitter as a emergency must have tool!

X2 I carry two 30' 30 amp cords from my last TT and 200' 20 amp cords plus assorted dog bones. If I stop at something like a fairgrounds in a field I can maintain some kind of power for battery power and other lower power usage.
