Bad Battery?

I've owned my '07 Roo for three years now. The first two winters, I did not disconnect the battery for winterization. Had no problems. This past winter I did disconnect the battery. Now my battery is only operating at 74% at full charge. It won't even turn on the lights in the camper, which I thought at 74% it would at least turn on one light. I know absolutely nothing about how the electric/panel works in this unit! Please shed some light on this subject, please! (No pun intended!) Do I need to buy a new battery, or is it possible that there is some kind of electric problem that needs addressed.

Suggest you put the battery on a 2 amp slow charge for one day, using an external charger, not the camper's converter. If that won't top it off, chances are the battery needs replaced. If you take the battery to NAPA or another parts store, they can test it and see if it has a bad cell.

I did all that. Slow charged till 100% for a full day. Took it to a mechanic and he tested it. Only 74% good. Was told that should have still turned on at least one light in the camper, but it didn't.

Sounds like some kind of electric problem. Have you turned the battery disconnect switch back ON?

Is this 74% number coming from a load tester? If so, depending on the guy running it, that number may be worthless. A quick way to eliminate wiring / other issues is to just hook some jumper cables up to the battery and see what happens. If everything runs fine with the cables attached, it's the battery.

2007 Roo/Shamrocks didn't have factory disconnect switches.
An owner would have to install an aftermarket switch.

True, but OP said the battery went two winters; without a switch that doesn't seem possible. I'm guessing one has been installed.

Assuming the battery is old, I am buying a new one. I don't see any kind of "switch" for battery usage. Do most of you who winterize disconnect your battery? Do you physically take it out of the holder and store it somewhere climate controlled?

I put mine in the garage with a BatteryMINDer on it in the winter.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005EKY20K...=AR8XJJ19SNPNX

Summers I just open the battery disconnect switch. If you don't have one, you should install one.

Cheap one:

Not so cheap one:

I installed a $5 battery disconnect switch on my dual batteries.
I simply turn the switch when the trailer is sitting for any length of time without shore power.
I stored it for 4 months during the winter, with no shore power.
When I picked it up in the spring, the batteries were still nearly full due to the disconnect switch.

You shouldn't allow a battery to get below 50% charge.
Sounds like you did numerous times, which shortens its life.

ays remove the battery and store it in my heated garage I have seen batteries freeze and the winter of 2014-15 we had a 35 below temp so with it inside stored I can always check them . all of my farm and boat and anything with a battery that is not used in the winter is removed.

A charged battery won't freeze. If it did, most of us here in northern Illinois would be in trouble with our cars. (Two winters ago, we had temps of -25F, it didn't go above -10F for 3 weeks). If you're seeing batteries freeze, you didn't have them charged.

If that is the original battery it is 8 years old and more then likely in need of changing out. I keep all my equipment batteries on batter tenders in my unheated shop and have not lost a battery in years. I thought is if you get 5 years or more from a battery especially where it is hot (biggest killer of batteries) you are ahead of the game. The disconnect switch is a very important feature to add if you don't have it already.

Check your voltage at the battery and then at a light that is turned on. Do you have voltage at the light? If not then you have a switch off, fuse blown or something.

I don't take any chances I just remove all batteries that are not being used from Nov. to april in a riding lawn mower, boat, motorcycle, tractors, camper and 2 classic cars its easier then checking to see if they have a full charge all winter just put then on a shelf for 6 months and easy to get to them to check or use when needed
