Bumper Receiver

Hi all. Has anyone ever used this produce? I saw it on Amazon and thought it may be an easy way to add a bike rack to the rear bumper without voiding any warranty. Thanks in advance for feedback.

If you're planning on bolting that to a travel trailer/5th wheel bumper I wouldn't advise. The bumper isn't strong enough to keep it from flexing with the weight of the bikes.

I'm not familiar with that unit but looking online I'm guessing the bumper is like most TT/5R bumpers. They're just not built to carry much more than the sewer hoses.

Thanks. Seeing me as they already mounted the spare tire unit to the rear bumper, I would agree that nothing more should be added to the bumper. Cheers.

Here is a newer product that adds strength, support, and more weight carrying ability. They have rave reviews for those that want to add a hitch fir bike carrying purposes Or a cargo carrier. I just installed them on my trailer.

No Way,

Only safe way is to have a receiver welded and braced to the frame.
But doing this mod may void to the frame warranty if you have any issues.
Unless the frame warranty has expired or you're not the original owner.

I am using it on my 2009 23SS. Before I did, I confirmed the bumper was welded to the frame properly. Have not had any issues whatsoever with it. I am carrying two bikes only on it.

You are very lucky. Search this forum and you will find many folks who have lost their entire "bumper" and whatever is bolted to it.

It is not a "bumper". It is a storage tube. It is not meant for anything other than that. The limit is the spare tire mount. Anything other than that is a gamble.

RooRob,
much debated issue attaching that 2" reciever to the light bumper...

go with the Mount n Lock struts mentioned earlier and you will join dozens on this forum that have had no issue adding bumper mounted bike racks and baskets... just be mindful not to overload them. Personally I have a bike rack for one bike AND a second carrier for HFreight aluminum basket that I limit to 50# of cargo. 3+ years and thousands of miles later I have no issues with the bumper after adding the struts for additional strength.

PS I don't recommend them on washboard roads in the backcountry!

Yup. The typical failure mode is the thin metal of the bumper tears away at the edge of the welds.

I opted to install a front-mounted hitch on my truck and use a Kuat Tansfer platform style bike rack.

I have yet to read a review of a bumper failure after the mount n lock strut was added. Obviously I would love to hear of some but all I have heard is “they are working great.” As they say “proofs in the cooking.”

Those bumper failures did not have the added mount n lock struts. If you have heard of failures after that install I would love to read them so I can make an educated decision on the struts.

Mount N Lock PLUS New Replacement bumper w 500# cap

Mount N Lock

80% of 209 amazon reviews give mount n lock 5 stars
13% give it 4 stars
5% give it 3 stars
0% give it 2 or 1 stars

ZERO of 209 reviews say the struts failed to reinforce the bumper to the point of failure.

UPTO 400 Pound-Feet of carrying load when installed.

23 more 5 and 4 star reviews on the mount n lock web page with ZERO mentioning a failure.

Now Mount N Lock is providing a NEW aluminum bumper to replace original bumper...

Quote:
Plus, the innovative design of our aluminum replacement bumper mounting brackets allows you to carry up to 500 pound-feet of cargo (i.e., 500 pounds supported one foot out from bumper), well in excess of the weight ratings for stock bumpers.
People...

Quit telling newbies they CANNOT mount a bike rack on the bumpers...

IT CAN BE DONE... within reason of course.

Rsdata, everyone is saying don’t mount that type of receiver on a stock, unmodified bumper which is what most newbies think they can do based on the marketing of the makers of these bumper-mount receivers.

I disagree. The problem is that most people DON'T qualify their statement as to a stock bumper. They just say "Don't do it" and go on to express the horror of a bike rack on a bumper. They never discuss beefed up bumpers/receivers.

I've bet I've responded to at least 30 of these people's statements over the past 6 years.

One guy even showed a picture of frame damage that had clearly occurred because the rear of the frame had been LIFTED and tried to pass it off as bike rack damage. When he was called out on it, he never responded.

I think we can agree that it would be much more helpful to suggest that the person search for options that others have used successfully.

Even then, just because others have not had a failure doesn’t mean you’d recommend it. Some people have connected those receivers to their bumpers without a mod and not had the bumper fail.

I just installed the safety struts so I could carry bikes. I was a little over protective and purchased a double set and installed 2 per frame by sandwiching it.

Here is my story...
http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...ts-158562.html

And some pics from today. I purchased an anti rattle hitch pin. It really took all the play out of the bike rack.

Be sure you get an RV rated Bike Rack. Some normal Auto Bike racks are not rated for RV use.

Have Fun!
Ron
