Carrying a Generator

We have decided to get a Honda 2000 watt portable generator. Our Shamrock 19 has no cargo storage that will fit the generator. Will I need to get a box to carry it on the rear bumper? We have a Toyota 4 Runner not a Pickup. Would I have a problem with fumes inside the 4Runner or inside the trailer if we carry it inside? How about an air tight tote to carry it?

the Honda has a vent cap to close off fumes.
but if you spill any gas on the Honda, then you'll have fumes unless you clean it.
i'd get tote to put it in and make sure you close the vent cap off.

but this is one of the reasons i'd never buy an SUV to tow with.

Check manufactures info on bumper. A 2000i and associated sturdy carrier may overload the bumper. It will also bounce around a lot. The vent cap in the generator is very air tight. A bigger concern for me would be where do you plan to carry a gas can?

When we had our high wall popup, I had the rear bumper super reinforced and a receiver installed. Put a cargo basket to hold totes with firewood and the spare gas can. I put my honda inside the door along with my cooler to compensate for the weight I just put on the back. No issues-ever.

We plan to carry a very small gas can empty til we arrive and get a gallon or so after setting up and pouring the gas into the truck for the ride home. We try to carry the smallest amount of liquid as possible to keep the weight down.

not sure what year your Roo is, but the newer ones have a sticker on the bumper, warning any extra weight or modification, will void the frame's warranty.

My dealer installed a reinforced receiver on my Roo 19. See pics. I've carried two bikes on a hitch for 3 seasons. Probably about 100 lbs. I wouldn't go with any more, though.
