Caulk / Silicone/ or Lap Seal

Greetings everyone. I have not posted in awhile, but since the seasons is coming fast, I have to get my camper ready and have what is probably a dumb question. I need to know if the sealant used around the "skirting " (i.e. wheel wheels and lower part of the camper, and around the exterior add ons (kitchen vent, speakers, cable jacks..etc..) is lap seal, 8150 silicone or just plain white caulk? I have a 2015 shamrock, and try my best to keep it looking new, but some of the sealant is cracking and I want to make sure she is top shape. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Not sure what they used on at the factory but I had a lot of cracks on various openings in my side walls after just two years. I used a latex caulk from Lowe's called "Big Stretch" that is supposed to handle movement.. will see how it works out. Being latex it is easy to work with.

Thanks

I am assuming that the sealant is a caulk them. Would this be correct? I also have some cracks around some of the lights. Just want to make sure I am water tight.

X2 That's what I use on vertical surfaces. Lap sealant is only for the roof (horizontal surfaces). You can get clear or white.

Be sure to mask the area you are caulking. Proflex can be messy.

Keep silicone in a different county than your camper.

While silicone has its place, it isn't anywhere near an R/V.

Well, you might use it inside the RV, but not on the outside.

Just remember Geocell Proflex is not for use everywhere because it is a solvent based product. Use the proper product for the task.

This is true but I think you would be fine on the areas in question.

Thanks everyone. I got the pro flex and completed the entire camper. Took me two days but came out great. I have another question though, what do you put on the bunk end seals to clean them and keep them from cracking?

303 is a great all in one product that has multiple uses. It's very popular on these forums. I use it on the seals, exterior decals, exterior plastics, etc.

303 (30313-CSR) UV Protectant Spray for Vinyl, Plastic, Rubber, Fiberglass, Leather & More – Dust and Dirt Repellant - Non-Toxic, Matte Finish, 32 Fl. oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KN0UOEE..._lOLRAbN0WH5VJ

303 it s then. This forum has not steered me wrong yet. Not to mention, my wife now thinks I know what I am doing every time I work on the darn thing. I do not have the heart to tell her that I have no clue and all the folks on this forum are helping me out. HAHAHAHA. Any way thank you all, I will be ready for the season in no time.

clean the bunk door edges of dirt, pollen, whatever... before sealing the bunk doors...

some posts on here describe how the seals pull off the camper when opening the bunk ends... I believe tree sap or some such landed on the seals or edges of the bunk doors and was not cleaned off before closing up to cause that to happen

I also at least once per year CLEAN the vinyl tent ends AND the rubber seals at the bunk door edges with 303 vinyl protectant... I just got back from 3 weeks in FL and decided to borrow a camp site neighbor's ladder while he had it out and did mine. A 2-3 foot window washer, a rag and some electrical tape made the job fairly quick and easy.

Geocell Proflex is the way to go for outside walls and it sticks to everything so can be messy
