I'm a little confused about some of the responses here. Don't the Roo's have auto changeover regulators so that you leave both valves open & they will automatically change from one to the other if one of them runs out?

My unit has an auto changer, problem is how to tell when it changes.

I run one tank till its empty then switch it by hand.

I pull the empty out and get it filled ASAP.

X2, Our Roo has the auto changeover, added the window to see when it switched so I could change out the empty tank. Haven't run out of propane yet.....

Yes, you are absolutely correct. The problem with that is if you always keep both tanks open you may not realize that one has gone empty. By only having one open, you will use it until it is empty and then you will turn it off and open the second tank. Doing it that way doesn't take advantage of the auto switching regulator, but it does keep you in touch with your propane levels.

You have two options.

1. Run manually. You'll know when to switch when your furnace/fridge stops working.

2. Run the auto switch over regulator. Now you have to check it periodically or you'll run out both tanks.

So your choice is to not check and perhaps run out in the middle of a cold night, or run on the auto regulator and check it "regularly."

Now that I understand the whole Selector/Auto Switch option that is the way we will go. It ends up that I did not have a propane shortage issue. Apparently when working on my furnace the tech left the selector switch pointing in the opposite direction of the tank I was using (and I had not set it up for auto nor did I have both tank opened up.) It was pointing to a tank I had closed. I read the instructions and what do you know, it is actually quite easy when you read the instructions! Doh! And we have plenty of gas - probably enough to get us through next year as well.

Glad it worked out. Something did not seem right with all that gas usage!

Leave both tanks open and let the auto changeover valve do its thing. Daily check the indicator on the valve with an inspection mirror through the top hatch - no need to cut another window in the tank enclosure. Some inspection mirrors even come with LED lights.

Thanks. Just purchased on Amazon. It will be useful for a number of reasons and I don't have anything like this.

Dw's makeup mirror worked great. And she never leaves home without it so I never have to worry about forgetting it.
